When you have one or the other plugged in and you wiggle the end around, Do you hear crackling? If you do, your card has a bad input and will either need to be professionally serviced, or replaced. If it doesn't crackle, but sometimes sound comes out, I'd check the connection to the mother board. I guess I'd check the motherboard connection anyway to be safe. Otherwise, get a sound card you know you can return if it turns out to not be the card alone. At worst, you'll have to get a new motherboard, at best, you can wiggle the cord and get sound when you need it.

Yea I would suggest go getting a sound card to replace it. On board sound aren't really good for handling multiple sound applications.

You might also make sure it's not muted. Double click the speaker on the task bar & see if anything says mute. or go under control panel & 2x click the sound icon then click the audio tab to see if it could be muted.
It's happened to me before.

You can get a decent SoundBlaster card for under 50 bucks.
