Look at us in basketball it is horrible, we created basketball thus we should win the sport and also we do have the best players in the world and yet we can't win (don't give m this stuff how our best aren't playing). Gymnastic we are never that good at it compared to Romania. I think after the olympics the steriod thing is going to take center stage again and it will be awhile before we are as dominate as we once were. |
I dunno what you're talking about. The US is doing great. We have 29 total medals: 10 Gold, 10 silver, and 9 bronze. China only has 22.
In basketball, a lot of our allstars did not want to come. Also, people like Nowitski and Ming are playing for their home countries, not USA.
A silver in men's team gymnastics is awesome. We haven't medaled at all in 20 years. In women's, Romania just held their spot. A silver there is great.
Paul Hamm also won gold for us in Men's all-around. I think the last time that happened was 1904!
We are also doing great in swimming. Did you see us win in both relays? The women actually smashed the world record. I think Keller deserves huge props for keeping pace with Thorpe.
Or how about Phelps? He's predicted to win more medals than any other swimmer in history!
Not the powerhouse we used to be? Did you expect us to sweep in all golds in every event? |

man watched that Hamm come back from 12th to take the gold after he blew the vault. Come to think of it everybody screwed up a little there at the end. He nailed that last event though. _________________

I was watching the Men's All-Around, and was in suspense right after Hamm screwed the vault. Oh man, the way he just blew it off and came right back to win is amazing! He's the first and only American to win gold in that event ever! |

Ya look where half of the olympians live. Here in the USA and train here and compete for other countries. I mean most of them live here, but because there is only so many allowed to compete per a event they go back on there ancestry. If you took all the people that train and live in the USA that have won medals it would be a total different outcome. Because it seems that 75% of the olympians train and live here in the good old USA. _________________ <eVa>Simpleman-V$=<RIP> |

Some how I doubt that those figures are even close to realistic. Even if they are though, I think the athletes have reason enough to come here. Maybe because we have better facilities? Seriously, would you rather train in Russia or the USA?
Also, your theory about all the athletes going back to their ancestry isn't really logical. So what if there are a limited number of spots? If you're not good enough to get on the US team in the first place, what makes you think you're going to win a medal against them just because you're competing for another country? _________________

The Americans really seem to be taking away the swimming competition. Just tonight I saw Beard Phelps and Piersol take gold (in three separate events)...two of those being new olympic records. Coughlin also took a bronze medal today. Phelps by the way now has 4 Gold medals, plus two others (both bronze I think).
From what I've seen, many olympic athletes are living here..(going to college, training, whatever), but I think it takes more that just living here to compete for the states. I don't think they compete for their home countries because they don't make the American team...I think they compete for their home countries because, well, they're their home countries.
Some countries I think do have better training facilities...or if not better, at least on par with the states. I think where we see this is those old Soviet Bloc Republics and their gymnastics pipelines. There, those are very important...I keep hearing on the commentary that every Romanian boy wants to learn the pommel horse...can't say the same for folks here in the states.
Edit:

Why risk getting injured playing a non-paid game? It could cost them millions. |

U.S. womens soccer team just took gold after scoring a goal in the second half of overtime. It's a huge win for some of the top players on this team like Mia Hamm, Joy Faucett and Julli Foudy who are retiring from International play. _________________
