It's about time. Won may have been old, but atlest it worked, and if there was an update and you could not get it you could still play. _________________ http://www.barbertonrhps.com - The offical Website for Barberton's West Theater Rocky Horror Picture Show in Ohio

Sorry, but I cannot resist.
Several times did WON do the following:
Tell you that you need to update, then tell you that you're already updated. Repeat this process until they decide they've tortured you enough.
Not notify you of updates, or have no available mirrors in their update list. Several times, i had to browse the internet (and download off of fileplanet ) for new updates.
Would completely crash at random times, sometimes for days.
Flush_packet, anyone?
Would ignore all your filters, giving you well over 20,000 servers whenever you updated your server list.
Would sometimes not show servers in your favorites list, not allow you to search for servers in your favorite list, and would take servers off of your favorites list for no reason.
Would not allow you to search for a server by IP if you had recently searched for the server or added it to your favorites. Recently sometimes meaning more than a week.
Would sometimes completely reset your controls and/or mouse sensitivity.
Disable your mouse in-game (even if it was ON in your control settings).
Would rewrite binds/scripts.
Would tell you that your ID is already in use (even if it wasn't), and wouldn't allow you to play until they decided to auth you again.
Kick you for random reasons.
Freeze computers, or exit to desktop.
Did not recognize console commands it was given.
Had some serious problems with LAN games at times.
And would sometimes delete or alter some default halflife files, forcing you to find a place that hosted default files, or reinstall.
Steam does have its bad spots, but so far I'm liking it much more than won. _________________

In my own experience I have not had any of those problems other than favorite list resets and flush entity packet (not that it doesn't happen in Steam, too). Also, in my experience, Steam has annoyed me a few times, but has worked great overall. It is getting more and more stable now. _________________

Of the 3 yrs playing the only problem I ever had with won was 1)updates which was very seldom. 2)thier system went down 2 times that I can remember. Other than that, I had zero of those issues you mentioned.
On the other hand, we have steam. The system that screws up the updates and you end up downloading it over and over. It locks you out of games like you mentioned won doing. Happened to me and deathbringer many many times. I get dumped to desktop in NS, and dod occasionally. TFC and TS seem to work better.
In the last 3 months Ive had more issues with steam than the entire time I had won.
Steam. |

Well I guess I already did my steam time with won then I have had every single problem I posted happen to me with won, several of them more than once -- others, hundreds...besides the initial setup, steam has been like a savior to me. I think my 1 week of pain and misery has been more than made up for by the months of good gaming.

I had problems too. I have learned a little trick for when it wants you to "re-authenticate". For some reason every time (about once every 3 months) it has asked me to re-enter my password it won't recognize my password properly, although it is the correct one I am using.
So, what I do is rename the ClientRegistry.blob file then start Steam and let it "update". After it finishes it asks me to log in again. At that point I bail out, rename the new ClientRegistry.blob and move the old one back (i.e. rename the original back to ClientRegistry.blob)
After that, when you restart, it will do a small update, but will not ask for your password. Cool huh?
By the way, I make a copy of my current ClientRegistry.blob every time I start Steam. I keep about the last 30 of them [using a batch file]. I make a separate backup of the file about once a month that I never delete. It has saved my "posterior" on several occasions.
P.S. If you ever get an error where Steam crashes immediately every time you start it up, try renaming (or deleting if you are brave) all of the *.log files in the "C:\Program Files\Steam" directory (or wherever you have Steam installed). It does wonders to cure some problems. _________________

Hmm, I still can't log in to steam. Same password error that BH and others reported. _________________ Support wildlife. Throw a party! |
