I'm looking for some info on some components. This is what I am looking for.

I have a budget of about $1,000 US. I need a MB, Processor, Tower with power supply, RAM, and sound card. I already have the monitor, vid card, keyboard/mouse, and headset.

*edit* I forgot to mention I already have the hard drives too. Unless it takes something out of the ordinary

I know of some places to look at but I don't know exactly what is good for equipment. Any advice will help.

Check out this link to see one I threw together. The motherboard that I wanted to put on it wasn't in stock (because of it's awesomeness it's sold out fast all the time) But I added it in this post along with the final price.

----> http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishList.asp?position=current&submit=view <------ (if you can't bring that page up tell me and I will post them individually)

Also for an alternative case with side door fan. I had to go with Pimpin Purple
http://store.yahoo.com/directron/dx01pld.html

Total Price $978.98

I can guarantee alot of these parts because I have worked with all of these parts I've put together in this system which is why I chose these. I know them all to be good brands and companies who's parts don't screw up, and if they do their support is above and beyond most everything else.

I like the it but I prefer motherboards that run the intel chipset, not a SiS. I have had problems with the SiS chipset.

Oopsy, I forgot to mention that I already have the hard drive too. Unless it takes some diff kind of hard drive.

YPAWOM, does the case have a power supply or is that optional?? And the first link said empty wish list. I do like that case though, kinda cool.

I'm gonna have to give you a call AG. I didn't even think of talking to the resident techy

Definitely go with Intel processor since you have somewhat of a bigger budget, it's pointless get a 64-bit right now for just regular home use.

Oh, and may I stress...LITE-ON optical drives

TOTAL $810.99

No the cases didn't come with power supplies, but I included one, and the ones that are bundled with the case aren't that great. I prefer to buy an empty case and add the power supply I want.

SiS sucks? Lets not throw opinions around when trying to neutrally help someone out and pick them the best parts based on experiance using them and hours talking to techs and reading reviews, instead of "Oh, that sucks". You can go for the one Darkath suggested too though, I just suggested the $74 to save you a bit of money, but the one he suggested is good, and if you don't mind paying that bit more I'd say go for it.

This is the second configuration, I took off the expensive Audigy 2 soundcard since the Motherboard has onboard sound and network. So it's at $810 for this system that looks the best so far.

2X 512MB DDR400 $178.00
AMD XP 3200 BOX 400 MHZ FSB $239.00
ASUS A7N8X DELUXE SOCK-A NFORCE DELUXE CHIPSET $125.00
BLACK ATX MID TOWER 430W/ WITH TEMP IND $43.00
----------
$585.00

The memory I first quoted was some top notch stuff. CAS 2, overclock to the hilt RAM. You can scale that down a bit to save some quiddage, so I requoted. With the board I listed, you definately want to dual bank it. Makes the system much more efficient. 2 512 chips > 1 1 gig chip in perormance. AMD or INTEL is up to you. I put down AMD because it has more performance per dollar amount. Blah, blah, blah.....runs hotter, blah, blah. I also can get INTEL cpu's if needed though. Why spend almost twice as much for something that isn't near twice as powerful? If you can find a Barton core 2500 that is unlocked, you can achieve the 3200 speed for around $90.00 for the cpu, with a little overclocking of course. If you can only find a locked one, you can still up the FSB quite a bit to hit the 3200 speeds anyways. Just make sure you have good RAM if you want to do this.I think the Nforce board I am talking about has a locked AGP bus, so you can overclock and not it affect your videos bus speed, which will make it stable as heck, even in an overclock condition. That is cool stuff. With a 2500 Barton it drops the system down to $495.00. Not too shabby.

By the way, this drive would rock in the system. Expensive for the size, but almost as fast, if not as fast as a SCSI drive. Runs EXTREMELY hot though.

WD WD360GD 36GB RAPTOR 10K SERIAL ATA $136.00

Talk to Silverone or Merf about water cooling your system though. Heh

How about this one

Pentium III 500
FSB 100
392 of assorted P.100 and P.133 memory
Some old Accubyte POS case
Power Supply: old (200)
Fans: none (an open case)

same setup since January 1999

PS: The next time I go 62-15 on you. Remember my awful system.

This is what I am looking at so far. All advice is still helpful.

Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-450&depa=1

Processor
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-156&catalog=343&depa=0

Rom
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-136-024&catalog=5&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1

I still looking for a tower though. I have a few that I am interested in but haven't decided yet. Next item will be RAM but I haven't looked to hard yet. I will be looking closer at the ones that have been posted here.

Oh, and may I stress...LITE-ON optical drives

AMD 64 machines outperform p4's clocked 1 GHz higher in the majority of benchmarks. Get an athlon64 3400+, you know you want to Being 64bit cabable is just one of the benefits of the amd64 cpus. The machines run 32bit code natively as well with full support for 3dnow, mmx, 3dnow+, SSE, and SSE2 code optimizations. Memory latency is much lower due to the on die memory controller. Then theres the 1 meg of full speed l2 cache on all but the 3000+, which has 512KB of cache. The amd64 machines have a much better branch predictor than the competition, and the penalty for a cache stall or branch prediction is much smaller, as both the integer and the floating point pipelines are under 10 stages, as oppossed to the p4 northwood with 20, and the new prescotts with 31. That means that if there is a miss the processor needs to wait fewer clock cycles to resume working. Hyperthreading on the p4's is a double edged sword, as the execution units vie for limited l1 trace cache space as well as l2 data cache space, which can cause cache stalls.

I do agree with you that lite-on drives are nice though.

I was originally looking at the AMD fx51 but price became an issue. I feel that buying something less than that one is not worth it to me. I will never be overclocking anything so that is of no concern. I am just looking for something tremendously reliable that will run well. I have had good luck with the Pentiums so I am leaning that way.

The thing that I don't know is specifics. I had a great talk with JD today and he gave me some helpful tips when looking for parts. An example would be when looking be sure to look at "retail" and not "oe" versions. This is stuff I had no idea about.

One question I did have though was is it worth the money to consider water cooling?? Is it any better for what I will using my machine for??
