It wasn't so much a cause, more like a spirit. Nobody aint tellin us what to do especially those darn northerners. Just because you fly the Confederate colors doesn't make you a racist or a redneck. Personally I see it as a symbol of live free, die well.

Well, no. I've done some research in the past and it's very foolish to say that the war was fought over slavery. The Draft Riots are a testament to that.

But slavery defined the economic patterns of the South. The North was becoming increasingly capitalistic - major centres of manufacturing and whatnot. The North was booming, population was increasing, revenue, trade, etc. The South was stagnating in that sense, from what I can tell - it wanted to stay the same. To my perspective, I see that those in the South wanted to live in a society where life was heavily, heavily dependent upon socio-economic trends that were a result of enslaving other human beings of a particular race. If you consider that way of life glorious, then that's simply the difference of opinion.

Anyway, didn't the whole war start simply because the North and the South became two entirely different entities? They were basically two different countries. And Shovels is right - most civil wars end in... hmm, genocide, mass executions and other fun things.

"The South Will Rise Again" - that I don't understand. The United States all already predominantly conservative, basically every recent president has been from the South. Bush Jr, Clinton, Bush, Regan (California sort of counts)... Canada is a nation governed by a very liberal (read: basically the same as the northern United States political alignment) group of individuals for a liberal group of individuals. The South is very different than the North even today - and therefore the United States is very different today. What is it that the South needs to rebel against?
