Planning to upgrade from Windows ME to XP. Is there anything that I should be aware of before I pop in the disk.

Yes, welcome to the real world! HAHAHA!

You are upgrading from Win MEH to The Playskool Xperience! It's going to be quite a change!

I have XP and it's actually pretty cool, but I still play all my games on '98.

Anything you do to lose Win MEH is a step forward anytime! Good Luck!

I did this same upgrade to XP pro. I didn't lose any data, such as mp3's or documents.

I did lose my registry settings, which meant in my Add/Remove programs, there you no programs installed. So, I had to go in manually and delete all of my programs, and then I reinstalled them.

If you got a full copy of XP, I would recommend wiping out ME, and then put XP on fresh.

Good luck.

Hopefully JD gave you good advice. I had to download drivers for my NIC, Video, DVD Decoder and something else becasue they weren't native on the CD.

Blue Ruler,

For the love of all that is holy and in any small way even remotely good, Do NOT leave Easy CD Creator software on your machine when you upgrade to XP! It has some sort of screwed up conflict and made my DVD and CD R/W completely unreadable by the operating system. Which is a kick in the head since the DVD is READ ONLY!!! It is not easy to fix it either. When you find the solution it is (I am not making this up) a simple 40 step process involving registry edits, diagnostic startup settings, directory deletions and more rebooting than you thought possible. It is particularly difficult when you can't put a disk in to install or uninstall ANYTHING!!! Okay, okay... go to my happy place... happy place...

But really, do pay attention to the little warning XP gives you when you install about anything "incompatible" with XP. Uninstall these things before you continue if you value your precious free time and don't enjoy hours of problem solving on Microsoft's "knowledge base". And don't even get me started on System Restore.

In fairness though, my system was pretty hosed before XP and I can't say XP made it worse. Most of what had to be uninstalled, could be reinstalled after the upgrade without too much trouble. But that CD Creator thing was a royal @$#@%@.

And as Bada says, "Unix, does in fact... rule."
