The trick is that the actual color (that you see) of the tiles is the same. Your brain understands that one is a gray tile in the light, and the other is a white tile in the shadow. However the color your eyes see is the same shade of gray for each.

The Square mark B looks lighter than the one marked A but in reality they're both the same shade.

| I've seen this one before. Puzzled me a lot, since, unlike other optical illusions where you could look at it differently and say "Hey, yeah, I see it now", this one............you just can't. |

Oh okay I got it. The actual shade of gray used without adding shadow or light is a median between the two you see. The tile in the shadow in lightened and the tile in the light is darkened. That's some crazy stuff

The illusion is that the square marked A looks a different shade to the square marked B. But they aren't different.
