Last night instead of playing TFC like I usually do when I get home from the gym, I was watching some STUPID man crack his skull after hitting a car at ~ 90mph. Him and his friend on their Beautiful Harley's passed me like I was standing still @ 70 mph and then one of them a 1/2 mile up the road swerved around a car while the other one hit it in the back.
The bike and the man slid another 50 feet past impact. I was first on the scene and surprised to find him still "alive". Just a slight pulse and labored breathing.
The nice leathers he wore saved him from severe bodily roadrash; the Heavy boots saved his feet and ankles; his leg was broken from impact but that can heal; the severe skull fracture and blood coming from the back of his unprotected head however, probably won't. A ~45 year old man with enough going for him to own a $20,000 bike now probably has a Brain as functional as a pet.
2 things... Helmets save lives!
Drinking and driving don't mix!
He forgot both of these rules...

That's prety bad, and my Brother wants to get a motorcycle. Not a Harley but one of those sportbikes. He actually looked into helmets and safety riding courses though. But I know the urge to showoff and zoom around might be pretty great with one of those things here in Houston where its common to see them zipping along well over 100mph. I'll be going 85 90 sometimes on the tollroad near my house coming home from my girlfriend's and I'll get passed by a couple of biker like that. They wear helmets most of the time, but they just wear t-shirts and jeans otherwise.
I know of a guy who had his tattoo on his back removed by skidding on the ground from playing around on his Ninja.

Thats an awful thing to hear TIII, I just hope all those with bikes use some common sense, wear protective clothing and always wear a helmet.
The streets can be deadly for a motorcycle, thats why I never left dirtbiking, it much safer than dueling with 2 ton cars on a daily basis.

I have ridden motorcycles for most of my life. Before I started working in the computer industry I worked for 7 years at a local motorcycle shop. We were a Honda dealer but I've owned lots of diffrent bikes.
I could tell you plenty of stories about friends getting hurt or killed riding. Some of them are tragic. Most involve stupidity or poor judgement in one way or another.
There is a saying that's popular among people who ride a lot about crashing: "There are two types of riders, the one's who have gone down, and those who are going down."
I can tell you from experience that an accident on a motorcycle is a sobering experience. I've walked away from two with very minor injuries (knock wood). It changes the way you look at life.
It's like so many other hobbies people have though. If it's done responsibly there is NOTHING like it. If you're stupid you end up dead. The stories like yours are something I don't miss about the bike shop.

I think we all need a moment of silence...
Amen
