Like YPAWOM, I have Roadrunner, but unlike him I have had to call for service. Once it took them 2 months to fix it. Then after the nimda virus they shut off port 80 for residential accounts. (port 80 handels webpages)

Now my webserver wont work and they tell me to get a static address w/ port 80 I have to buy a commercial account. Like 150 bucks, no thanks.

With DSL I can get 5 statics on a residential account.

I have Road Runner too, and a while back it got really bad, but they must have upgraded my node or something because it is much better now. When no one else in your area has it, cable totally rocks. But once your area starts getting crowded with broadband users, it looks like the really expensive DSL accounts (higher priced than basic DSL)might have the better connections. But of course you pay through the nose for it. I have seen what appears to be pulse transmissions of data with cable. Like traffic flowing until it hits a stop light and stops completely then roars on again a little bit later. Average speed is not too great, but you literally have no connection for a while. Playing TFC sucks for me when this starts happening. When the light turns green, FingerDemon be Dead!

I am curious about the satellite connection Frag, doesn't the couple of seconds of lag time to and from satellite impact gaming? I wouldn't think it would bother folks surfing, but for online gaming I didn't think satellite connections were an option. I don't know it's just what I thought.

And I concur about http://www.dslreports.com , its an awesome resource. http://www.speedguide.net is good too.

Saturday
AT&T @ home the odd one out
On the day after the ruling allowing Excite freedom in dealing with the cable franchises, it appears that only AT&T@home did not negotiate a temporary extension, and was shutdown. There are, however, various DNS, email and outage problems continuing with the other @home partners, perhaps due to the general chaos. Although AT&T has a backup network, and some customers have switched (picking up sought after email addresses as well), one must assume most AT&T cable customers are currently dead or on dialup. Discussion continues in AT&TBI forum or @home forum, join the party there now.

Also, sometimes while i am playing TFC my screen freezes. It looks like lag but I can still hear the fighting and see people typing. When I get out to get back in I cannot. I cannot even get to other sites. Rebooting the modem seems to be the only thing that works.

Finger, on the satellite.... I have seen that you have to pay for service to use the download speed from satellite. That cost as much as DSL. Then you have to pay for an ISP to handle the upload speed. Unless it has changed I don't see how it would be worth it.

I have been cut off as well. From what I have read AT&T has switched customers (86,000) in the states of Washington and some other northern state. I have sent an email since I could not find the chat customer services. I have asked for when I could expect to be switched over to Ma Bell's network. The news report said that all 850,000 of Ma Bell's customers are to be switched over within 10 days. We shall see! Well NetZero here I come for a few weeks!

Rob, I am back on as of today but if the forums on dslreports.com are correct, It should go out again. I remembered that I bought a US Robotics modem about 2 years ago,dug it out of the closet and installed it. Signed up with mindspring/earthlink and got suprising results. I was connected at about 46.8. Not sure how that happened, I was connecting at no more then 24 with my old computer. Prolly a crappy modem or outdated drivers or something. Anywho, I must pay for 2 ISP's untill this whole Excite@home thing sorts itself out. Check the forum for my ISP

Oops, you may need to cut and paste the second half of the link-not sure why it's not working.

Woohoo! Yes ladies and gents I have been successfully switched over to AT&T within 24 hours. Applause for you AT&T guys for working around the clock so some of us can get on with our lives and play TFC. One problem though, the connection seems to be mucho faster, but i have to go through so many hops that some websites don't load properly. Oh well maybe it will get better threw out the week.
