I don't know if this will help you, but I think when I had that happening to me, it was a video card issue. I swapped out my old video card for a geforce2 and haven't had the problem since. _________________ I need to make a sig, but I don't have the time. Maybe I will eventually. |

i get that rarely, but it does happen...i think it has to do with the WONAuth, becasue when im DLing hardcore, and i get that stupid cd kye in use thing it takes a looong time to come up, and something happens while its taking so long and BEEP and a restart... then i go try again seconds later and works fine..not sure what the exact cause is, but if youre looking for more resources is your PF all fragmented and/or too small? try making it min-max the same size, 1.5times the RAM you have...that might help _________________

Which brand of memory do you have in your machine? I have known boards that will restart unless you have certain brands of memory.
Also, does it restart only in HL? _________________ Been chasing since May 2001!

What OS are you using?
Have you checked your video drivers? What type of video card do you have?
I know, a lot of questions, but it helps us narrow it down. _________________ Been chasing since May 2001!

I believe I have read to check disable cpu instruction sets in the opengl settings in you display settings. _________________ I need to make a sig, but I don't have the time. Maybe I will eventually. |

I have XP pro, and an Nvidia card, and I don't have restart problems. I do have some unexplained lag, basically spikes, and I think it is my system. I will be reimaging sometime in the future, once I get a new computer together.
Press Control - Alt - Escape and look at the Task Manager. See how many processes you are running, and notice the amount of memory you are using. The more processes running, the more memory being used.
You can type msconfig in the run command area. This will let you dictate what is starting up when you boot up.
I know that somebody posted a website that told you what most of the services are that are running XP pro. The site told you which ones you could disable to free up memory. I have it bookmarked at home, but I am at work now. I will go and find it then, or you could search through here for it. _________________ Been chasing since May 2001!

i was poking around on on another forum and a thread like this came up, the random restarting was casued by overheating of the the GPU and/or CPU...hows the ventilation on your vido card and case in general? do you have a temperature probe or sometihng you can monitor whilst in HL to see what your temps are doing? mine used to creep up there with the intensive 3d stuff, and i think my connection restart thing is just coincidental heh _________________

Make sure you have the current Det drivers. And then one other trick is a read write SGP4x cards have that are Nivida. In bios disallow direct gpu to cpu read write. It is not supporeted well.
And as Pond said heat will force a auto shut down even with a non intel chipset. Cool it and cool the case.
