I'm starting to be something of a graphic artist, more or less a n00b, and I was wondering what programs would be most beneficial to me?

Any other help bits and tips you can offer is appreciated as well.

"Danke danke!"

well i'm in the process of getting my technical degree in graphic design at antonelli school of art and photgraphy. basically i think its 3 programs so far. adobe photoshop, illustrator. and a program called quark for layouts. p/i for editing and quark is the best possible programs for laying the final piece out. its all on macs though. and i ahte to say it but they ahve better graphics than pc's do. and some programs might be mac only.... oh well hope i helped a lil bit...

Those are great programs Giz and a must for any graphic artist.
If your just starting out I would try Paint Shop Pro. It's real easy to understand/use and gives you a good understanding of the basics before you move onto the big boys.

Giz, you need to post more of your work.

Macs have better graphics?! Your head is on backwards man, your mind has been polluted by Mac scum, go get a new one. If you break open a Mac they are the same graphics cards as PCs. Geez what a line of bull, That's Mac propoganda for ya though. Not to mention how much more expensive they are when you could build a PC that would kick their ass up and down the street graphically for less cost.

By the way Quark is NOT only for the Mac, I have it on my PC. Anyways, these are some programs I suggest, as a fellow digital artist. (Art Institute of Houston)

Adobe Photoshop v6/7
Adobe Illustrator v9/10
Macromedia Dreamweaver
Macromedia Flash 5
Macromedia Director 8.5 Shockwave studio
Quark

Also be sure to get lots of cool plugins for each of those programs as well to enhance their abilities. And get yourself some drafting tools, pencils, a drafting table, big fat sketchbooks, ruler, T-square, triangles. You'll use those to draw out thumbnails and plan designs before you get to work on them so you don't waste time fiddling around looking for what you want to do.

I myself am an animator and 3D modeler, but I have alot of friends in Graphic Design and Multimedia/Webdesign ajnd that's what they use and do, design is all basically the same. I draw alot to get ideas and if you can draw well you can usually translate good design onto the computer.

Mac people tend to be pretty stubborn! There WAS a time when Macs were clearly superior to PCs in certain areas, but not any more. Today they are just a stylish, underperforming alternative to Wintel dominance.

Good ol' TYO spent 8+ years as a graphic artist. Here's my tidbits of info.

  • Quark XPress is the dominant page layout software, but take a look at Adobe InDesign if you have a chance. Adobe is working hard to bury XPress with this product, and it's pretty neat. Macromedia Freehand is a common alternative to Illustrator, but if you know one you can use the other.

  • Photoshop is the Big Kahuna. Learn it, live it, love it.

  • Get good at "boring" things like photo touch-ups, color correction, and setting good type. In the real world, you'll probably spend more time doing this than showing off your Mad Design Skillz.

  • Get fast and be productive. Learn your keyboard shortcuts. Find places where you can dig up fonts and stock art in a hurry.

  • Keep an eye out for grammar, usage, and spelling. You can hand a customer the most perfect design in the world, but if there's one typo they'll think the whole thing is s**t.

  • Practice copying the styles and techniques used by others. Customers will frequently request you to make something look "just like this".

Sweet! Where are you from? I've been in State College since '88, but am originally from Altoona. I'm Penn State class of '92.
