w00t actually comes from the old school FPS multiplayers(Doom, Quake)...they made a sound like WHOOT when they jumped.

Accually you're all wrong with the origin of the word w00t. It was posting in an editorial on the cats, and I'll sum it up for you.

The word w00t is a combination of 2 words accually, whooo and root. It was originated back around the late 80s and early 90s when hacking was kind of at it's prime. Back then everything was on a slow unstable connection and security was the last thing thought of. Many unix boxes were left totally unsecure. Now if anyone knows the hierarchy of unix, it goes like this (highest power to least) Root, Admin, User, etc. There might be more depending on how you arrange your network, but that's the basic way of understanding. Root now is the level of permission that should be limited only to people with physical access to the box, because someone with root permissions has access to everything. If a hacker was to crack the root password, then he should be happy hence why whoo was used with it. So after some time in irc chat with slow connections, people began adding the 2 words together to make "w00t"
