Okay, tonight at 7pst I am going to get parts for a new comp to replace my p2 400. (finally!) It is 3 1/2 years old now. I have been looking everywhere for benchmarking and seeing what one performs better. As far as I have seen AMDs outperform the P4s by speed and price. The price of the AMD is a big factor of my decision. I am thinking of getting either a XP 2200 or P4 2.26. I am just curious which one is better for HL and CS in your opinion.

On a side note, i believe that i will be getting a GeForce 4 128mb and either 512mb to 1024mb of ram. Also, it will be MY own first comp. The other was the families. Also, once i get the money i am buying my own DSL, too. So within the next year, i will be competitive.

So AMD Athlon XP 2200 VS. Intel Pentium 4 2.26. What would you prefer?

I'd go with the XP2200 if you're on a budget. Heck, get the XP2100 and save another 40 bucks.

TFC and CS are more dependent on video card than processor speed, so either of the two you listed are going to be obscenely fast.

I would say go with the AMD. They have seemed to be better for gaming anyhow.

If its price/performance your looking for then go AMD. The 2200 actually perfoms more closely to the 2.5 P4. For TFC it wont matter which one cause you will never use even half of the speed of those processors. Just get a good vid card with the money you'll save on the CPU.

AMD all the way, baby! One word of advice... get a different fan than the one that comes with it... not that there is anything wrong with that one... just to protect yourself. I bought a copper fan. It cost me around $40, but I think it was a wise investment. I don't know... what do you think, POND!!!? You know, Pond is the resident AMD system cooling expert around here. Don't let his spelling fool ya!

Okay, i went to the computer store and got prices for all of the things that i am getting. Its not graved in stone but i am pretty sure i am getting AMD, since money is limited. I will post a new thread when i come home with my comp's pieces tomorrow. YAY!!! I have added the prices and it should be around $1000. It should work perfectly fine for me, so you will have to wait to find out what i am getting, just like i have to wait to go get the pieces. After i get it up and online (getting it online might take awhile, sadly) I am going to do the analyze system test for half-life and see the HUGE difference.
