Well, I have saved some money and i am going to buy a new comp soon. I am gonna have a friend build one for me but i am not sure what i want in it. I got about $1200. I want it for games, graphics and animations. I got a p2 400 right now so i really do need one. I am mainly looking for motherboards and processors right now so if any of you have suggestions, i am all ears.

I'm not to sure on motherboards but I've had nothing but good luck with pentium processors. I got my maching for gaming and photo editing <---for the wife. The one thing I'd recommend is don't skimp on the RAM. I noticed a big difference with the x-tra memory. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread myself for future endeavors of my own. G/L on the new machine. I think your due for another one.

For $1200.00, you can have an awesome computer. Seriously, check the Dell web site and build your own that way. The deals on new computers are insane right now!

I don't think Dell offers AMD's but a P4 isn't bad at all. I assume that all you need is the tower guts correct? you probably have a decent sound card already eh? If so, that will save you cash! Spend most of your cash on two main components. . ie, Video Card and Motherboard. Processors are actually fairly cheap now-a-days compared to motherboards and video cards.

Stay away from "all in wonders"! They are EXTREMELY limited as far as growth is concerned. If you are experienced with rebuilding computers, I would recommend finding a storefront that sells computer parts and accessories. That way, you can build your own and save all that cash for labor. The money you'll save can go into better parts for your comp! Stuff to ponder.

As for the HD, anything less than an 80 gigs is a crime! Western Digital is a fine product. $1200.00 won't get you state of the art but it can build a worthy gaming machine no doubt!

A gaming tower is the most expensive tower to build really. As far as hardware goes. And after all that cash. . time. . effort. . . you are only as fast as your connection!

Make sure you are geting a good graphics card, and look around for simular computer too, they sacrafice some things to make others better....

As in my computer I could of gotten one with a DVD player or what i got double the ram and a TNT2 card (back in the day it was... good...)

Build your own computer is the way to go now though, saves you alot of time and you get what you want.

I'll suggest a few things... #1, loads of RAM! it's the cheapest component, and makes the biggest difference. If you get 512MB, get it as one stick, so you have room for upgrading later!

Two systems:
Athlon XP 2100+ (cheap, and still darned fast)
My suggestion would be a Gigabyte mommyboard, but Soyo, Asus, or ATI would be basically the same thing. Anything KT333 chipset, 266 if you want to save $$$ I'd also choose a board that has 4 IDE controllers, so you can add more storage/devices in the future
Video card... that's tough, GF4 Ti something, or a GF4 MX 460/440... depending on how much you want to spend on a card.
512 MB DDR RAM, one stick. Honestly, I'd skimp on the video card and get another 512 RAM, might as well make it an even GB.
HD... I'd suggest two HDs, it's always nice to have a second drive for mass storage, that way system crashes don't wipe out your mp3s and pr0n..... errrr... I meant, all your school research papers that you are saving to assemble into a resume and portfolio...
*ahem*...

Pentium 4s are a bit of a problem right now, the newest ones are 533 MHz bus, but they also (will?) require a different mommyboard, since they use too much power. The current boards' sockets can supply 60W, but you'll need 70W soon... If you get a 2.8 or 3.0 P4 soon, you gotta be careful about the board you put it in... I only say this if you'd be thinking about upgrading in a year... i.e. you buy a 2.0 GHz, your board won't be compatible with a 3.0 GHz chip.

I'd suggest:
P4 2.4 533 FSB
mommyboard: I don't know, SiS 645 chipset is what I've heard is good
512 MB DDR RAM (again, might as well just make it an even GB)
Video card... same as XP box, GF4 Ti or MX 460/440
HD... again, I'd go with 2...
