Can someone please explain the British way of getting a license? Bobbins, you have me lost, is the driving theory like our permit test? Some explanations would be nice(but all of my confusion could be from not caring about our own way of getting a license).

ok, ok... here goes...

you can get a provisional licence, this is what you need to be able to start learnin, just by fillin in a form

then you can start learnin

now the old way we used to get tested was all in one... we had the practical test then at the end the examiner would then test you on road safety and road signs and stuff like that

but when your nervouse n just had a prac test you could mess up just from nerves

so a few years ago...

the new system was brought in

with this system you cant even book your practical test without first takin and passing your theory test

now the theory test is a computerized test with 35 questions about anythin from road signs to safety to what you should do in certain situations

now to pass you have to get 30 or more, this way it prevents you from worryin about the questions the examiner will ask you at the end of the prac test... and you can consentrate on that

then you can book your practical test... this is just a drive... with an examiner... the examiner will ask you to take a certain route so as to see how you react in certain situations... and the examiner will also ask you to perform manovers

if you pass the prac.... the n you can send off for the licence... and their ya go... you can leagly drive on your own

i hope this explains it for you

maybe the theory is as to why they drive on the wrong side? and the practical points out the uses of it..

which shouldn't take too long

Thanks bobbins, it does sound similar to what I know about how it is done here in America, you guys just give it different names.

Hmm... we apply for a provisional licence, so we can drive a car with anyone who has a clean licence, has had it for 3 years and is aged 21 or over.
We take a 'theory test', in which we have to answer correctly at least 30 out of the 35 questions. This doesn't have to be after a set amount of lessons - but if we don't obtain a full licence within two years, we lose the theory test award.
Only once we pass the theory test can we take the 'practical', in other words the real test. It's all down to this 40(?) minute piece of driving. It's up to this one person to decide if you are a safe driver. If you make 15 minor errors - FAIL.
I got 9 'minors', several of which were speed related - I reached 35mph twice, approach speed towards a couple of junctions, and some others. I also kept too wide a berth between the car and the kerb when reversing around the corner.
A single 'major' - FAIL. This includes, funnily enough, hitting the kerb/pavement when reversing around the corner. So do it my way and get a minor instead Also, if you lock the brakes and skid during the emergency stop procedure, that'll fail you. There was, a few years ago, a TV documentry over here with 2 people, 1 of whom passed (A MAN), and the other of whom failed (A WOMAN) . The woman screeched her tyres during the emergency stop, amongst many, many oth.., many other things, and failed. The man made a minor error by putting his rear wheel on the kerb while turning out of a junction. But his test wasn't as funny, so I don't remember much else about it, except for his 1337 emergency stop.

I digress. Get a Provisional Licence, get 30/35 in theory, do a decent practical (real test). That's all there is to it.
I think I've told you all before about a classmate of mine, who got 5 majors and a dangerous (really). For dinner he had a T-bone steak.

Thanks for all of the info here. With all of the people from different countries that come here, sometimes I guess things like this will happen. This actually is a unique exerience and you get to learn about these other countries.

BTW, congrats on the test bobbins.

No, you didn't confuse me this time, the only thing you have confused me was the terms that you use for your tests. My parents are in a way trying to encourage me to drive, but I don't really have much of a use for it. I don't go anywhere, except for school (which is almost everyday of the year).
