I'm a regular reader of Ars Technica, and noticed a bit of news about a company called Forgent which claims to have a patent on jpeg technology, and is now demanding royalty payments. The patent is 17 years old and they acquired it when they bought a different company. Go here for Forgent's press release.

Uh, yeah.

png = best image format

same or smaller than jpgs
is NOT patented
and doesn't lose quality with successive saves (jpgs do)

png = portable network graphic

Why is it that they didn't speak up sooner? I doubt anyone will pay now beings jpegs have been so widely used now that it would almost be impossible to have people pay. Either that or this company will get rich quick(which I doubt).

i read a long thing bout it somewhere, basically, a patent holder can not charge for as long as they want. so basically, they waited until it was REEaaly popular and everyone used it, so they can get more money out of it. bastards.

Well, I guess there will be a big battle over this soon or it will just disapper, becuase I doubt people will want to pay for this now. They will most likely just transfer over to a non-patented method if they had to.

Which was what I was thinking about when I posted. lol. I really don't care what the standard is as long as there is a free standard.

PNG was created in response to Compuserve's licensing of the GIF algorithms. However I thought PNG was a "line art" type of mechanism and does not work as well on real life images the way JPEG's do?

Let me rephrase that. Now I might be wrong on the terminology below but the concept is what I'm trying to explain..

The difference between raster (PNG, GIF) and pixelated (BMP, JPG, TGA) is how the internal image data is stored. Raster images are composed of geometric shape definitions, while pixelated images store pixel definitions (or deltas). Both image types are capable of rendering an image of identical quality, it comes down to which one makes the smallest file for the image type.

Line art, most commonly used on the Internet as icons and such, are usually raster images. For this, the PNG format was created. JPG (a lossy image compression scheme) is usually used for real-life images - people or scenery. A 200x200 resolution picture of a thin black line on a white background will be about a 1k or less PNG file, but a 5-10K (depending on compression) JPG file. The same resolution image of my face will be a 100K PNG file and a 20K JPG.

With lossy compression schemes like JPEG, MPEG and the like you will see quality loss as compression goes up, but this can be controlled by the image creator as a tradeoff of file size versus quality.
