I had the very same problem yesterday after i formatted and reinstalled everything (I have WinXP btw). Apparently, Microsoft got into a lawsuit with java.sun.com over something which caused WinXP to be released without Java Virtual Machine. And for some reason now, it's completely removed from Microsoft and it's Window's update.
So what i did was I installed a different Java, from http://java.sun.com (not microsoft, but still works). |

I think mine is working and I am running Win99SE with IE6. I think I have java. Will this also affect me if I reinstall? Is this other java program better? _________________ I need to make a sig, but I don't have the time. Maybe I will eventually. |

Sun is the best plc to get java. But there is no diff from the one issued by Microsoft (because they borrowed it without permmision from sun).
Therefore it will not be released with IE lol.

Hey, I know I'm new to the forums but I think I know some stuff about the java prob's you guys are having...
Java runs through a compiler thats referred to as the Java Virtual Machine (VM for short). It is owned as intellectual property by Sun Microsystems. The main idea behind java was a programming code that could be widely implemented via cross-platform compatibility, so that code that works on Unix will work on Windows, provided that it has the VM. Not too long ago there was a big stink between Microsoft and Sun about the VM. M$ wanted to change the VM so that they could add some of their own methods (aka built-in functions) that were only available to Windows users. Sun didn't like that and eventually won their court case. Almost like payback, M$ in their release of WinXP did not include the VM - so java just won't plain work.
The workaround is to download the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from java.sun.com. The current version is JRE 1.4 and is a 10Mb download. If you have a previous version of Windows, you don't really need it for java to work (but hey, It sure won't hurt!).
(Reading this over, its seems rather insulting to those who already know this - many of you, I'm sure already know this and more, but I'm sure there are a few who don't.) _________________ *******************************
