I would've thought that if you'd been going out with someone long enough to consider marrying them, then both of you would be serious in the relationship and know you are committed to each other.

When I proposed I gave my soon to be wife a ring and told her it was temporary. She said "what do you mean temporary?". I told her that this weekend we will be going to the jewelry store and she would pick out what ever ring she wanted, price didn't matter. Now she has a ring that I know she likes, not just because I got it for her. BTW, the first ring I got her we took back and exchanged, it wasn't cheap so we applied it to the one she got which wasn't cheap either.
