This started as a discussion between me and Borg and I'm now sending it to the polls.

I'd have to say demoman.

Scout, Medic, Spy, are all O classes, no real D capability
Hwguy is really a pure D class
Solly is too slow
Pyro is ok, but not strong enough
Snipers are just pointless.
Engys are ok on O, but don't have enough armour

Demomen can set pipe traps, and stuff on D, but also rock on O if you are skilled enough.

You know where my vote lies.

A bunny hopping Soldier isn't very slow.

Given not as fast as other offensive classes, but can get back to the action reasonble quickly, I guess that is somewhat map dependent. For example Avanti is an excellent map for an offensive soldier. However some larger CTF maps wouldn't be in their favor offensivly.

Defense duh, solly's pwn on d!

It's gonna depend on the person really, not the class. The only one I can't really defend with is scout, I get pwned. It's a toss up though. How about a poll on who the most versatile player is, heheh .

I don't know enough about the different classes to make an informed vote.

I think it is selling the HW short to say he is purely D, though. Consider Avanti. HWs are great on O. Great for sheilding teammates from SG blasts so they can get by. Great for plowing through the defense. And great for taking down SGs, or at the very least, weakening them.

But you all knew I would say all that....

The more I play demo the more I think they are uber. I'm not quite good enough at O with him yet, so my vote still goes with soldier. However, I'll probably soon change my mind.

Ok I guess with this poll your going to have to assume that all the people playing are on the same level of skill.

The more I think about it I think the more it has to do with the map. Avanti is great for most classes on O or D just b/c of the way it is designed. However on CTF maps you see the breakdown in the HW ability on O b/c of how slow he is. Sure he can get over there, kill some people on the way, but he's not unstoppable and against a soldier of equal skill I believe the HW comes out on the losing end. Soldies simply do much more damage per shot and move a great deal faster than fatties. While only having 100 less armor.

As for demoman, you can make a good argument there. There fire power in conjuction with their faster speed more than compensate for the lack of health/armor. However I believe this class is much more difficult than soldier to play at a high level. So Perhaps you are right about the demo.

This really is going to be a matter of perspective. I guess if I was good at solly, I may say solly, but I suck at it and I can actually play offense as engie, so that is probably why I think that engies are more versitle, they are at least for me.

Imma hafta agree with the way the poll is going..

solly takes the cake rockets for up close or SG destruction and super shotty for distance

followed somewhere close behind by da medic .. I mean a defensive medie is mean as hell man

Soldier:

Heavy armor (only hw has more)

Heavy damage weapons-primary (sniper has a charged shot but soldier doesnt have to wait to charge 2,3,4 shot...demo close or equal for power...spy has knife power)

Shot range (sniper has range but only one charged shot at a time...demo and spy dont have the range for primary weapon...rockets slow but have the range of sniper rifle)

High life (only HW equal to life)

Splash damage (pyro as much damage and demo doesnt have range)

Leaping ability (scout, medic, and demo)

Speed (gives up a lot to other classes...if solly knows how to bhop then look out)

Secondary weapon-super shotty (pretty much equal to or greater than other classes unless you classify demo gl as primary and pipes as secondary...pyro has good secondary weapon also)

Primary grenades (can carry 4 regular nades when use properly with rocket can be huge blast area)

Secondary grenades (not quite as good at mirv but very able)

Specialty= knocking enemies of thier feet and having a rocket waiting on them when they land)

Overall I rate them most versatile...

A good demoman can be very nasty...(there is a difference between good demoman and good spammer)

Hmmmm, probably Medic. There are SOOO many ways to play that class. Medpacking spreader of chaos. Conc jumping cap specialist. Defensive ass-saver. Speedy super-shotty deathmatcher. Long distance SG-owning nailgunner. There's no task you aren't prepared for, if you have the skillz. Not that I do, mind you!

Demo and Engie have a lot of little nuances to learn, too. Always fun to play. Solly is the most balanced class, but pretty straightforward.

Hmm... I'm still trying to make the transition

But demomen have a use on most maps for blowing holes in walls or grates, can make reasonable jumps, albeit hurting themselves and not as good as a medic or scout. Nice, destructive MIRV grenades When on D, demomen can change their strategies according to how the rest of the team is performing, in that either they can be aggressive and use their grenades and MIRVs, or sit back and use pipes. In attack, however, they can only hope to make their way forward with MIRVs or detpacks, hoping to be left alone until they can hit their targets.

I also vote for medic. Whether you're attacking or defending, you want a medic. That's not true for a lot of the classes. You'll usually want a solly and a sniper too... but that doesn't mean they're versatile. Medics are great on O, and can be surprisingly good on D.
