Goldom ..thnx... see extra edits.....

I still thinnk that these types of threads do not belong in this type of forum. Sooner or later it becomes racist and "whose country" is better that someone elses. blah blah blah...

Shame I burnt the soap box......

Living in Quebec, I am always exposed to language debates. Although I am still fairly young and ignorant, so correct me if I'm wrong, I do believe that if you work anywhere in Canada or the USA (and many other countries) you are only doing a disservice to yourself by not learning the English language.

English businesses in Quebec complain that they are required by law to put up French signs. I can understand their frustration, as they may say this goes against their constitutional right for freedom of speech, but how will it help you if you shut out 80% of the population by not putting up French signs. Just as how will it help you do well in America if you do not learn to speak English.

Of course, then you must look at the other side of the story. Many immigrants, mostly those who come from undeveloped countries can not afford to get the education to learn the English language. And even if they did have the financial means, many of these people spend most of their day working at 2+ jobs to feed their families, which leaves them little time to do anything else.

Although there are always going to be people who abuse the system, it is not only immigrants who do that. Now about the woman who wanted to take the picture for her ID with something covering her face, that is just stupid. When you live in a country, you must respect its laws. Your ignorance towards them is not excusable.

Anyways I could write more but i'm tired...I hope you understood all that, I have a tendency of not rereading, or paying attention to what I write

i think thats rediculas -- anyone could then use that id as long as they covered up their face -- totaly stupid.

i can't really coment on what most of u have posted cos i live in the UK and i dont wont to offend people

whot i can comment on though is the language issue -- its the same here in the uk -- their are people who imigrate into this society who dont speak a word of english -- not one and dont make an effot either -- now i dont have a problem with people wonting to speak their 1st langusage with each other but when u move into a coutry were their 1st language is different u shouldn't expect the people who already live in that country to learn your language u should go out and at least try and learn the new language so that u can mix in with the new comuntiy.

a good example of this is a family who live near me -- i was and still am friends with the onse that went to my comprehensive school ( this is going a few years back ) and they could speak english fine and their own language ( obviously ) but they had a grandmother and mother who lived with them who both couldn't speak english and never tryed to learn -- they had to rely on their kids to translate stuff 4 them -- this benifited my mate though as whenever he got into trouble and had a letter home he could make up whot was said in it -- lol.

i once again dont wont to offend anyone with whot i have written but if i moved to a country -- i would love to move to spain ( or the us but the us speaks english ) -- then i would learn the language -- i would find it essential to learn the language otherwise how r u gona survive -- i know in spain its quite touristy with lots of english speaking people holidaying their so a lot of spanish people speak english but i would lean it whatever -- out of politness -- to b able to speak to them in their own language i would find esential

I will say this...

The United States has no "official" language. It something unique to very few countries, the US being one of them. This is one of the reasons it is so hard for Legislators to rule on disputes of language. If you have no official language for basis of comparison, how can you determine which language is better or who is in the right.

I am, however fully in support of English becoming the official language, and I really wish it was.

Okay, thats my small, non-offensive contribution to this rather dangerous thread...(not a danger yet, but VAST potential.)
