Well, the day has finally come... well almost. On Wednesday, I leave for Norway. I will be gone for two months, so please don't forget me. I will be back in earnest in August burning up the place once again, but for now, I am out.
Just in case anyone is interested, I am involved in a sport called Orienteering. (click here to see what Orienteering is) I am going to Norway to train for a month, because that is one of the best places to train. The sport originated in Scandinavia, and is a national pastime. Unfortunately, it hasn't gained much popularity in the States, so I am sure none of you have never heard of it, but our Swedish friends may have. In July, I will be traveling down to Spain to compete in the Junior World Orienteering Championships, representing the good ole US of A. At the end of July, I travel to Sweden for the biggest orienteering event in the world, the Swedish Oringen.
This sport has been a pretty big part of my life in the past year, as I have risen to number one in the 20 and under category, and I am only 16. I may be the first American to have a chance to compete competitively on the international level, so I am doing my best to make it happen.
I will miss all you guys, and especially burning up Avanti. Don't forget me, I will be back in August.
Here is a picture of a Finnish Orienteer:

Hehe, RTFM
It is a solo sport just like any other running sport. Also like other running sports, there are relay competitions that involve a team. _________________ Amen!

Good trip and good Luck Monk.
Give my regards to Bjorn Hjellstrom.
Since your into Orienteering I doubt that we will have to worry about you not finding your way home.

Now that I think of it, I will have internet access while I am there, so I can still access the forums, but I won't be able to play TFC. Since my stay there is strictly for training and competing, I won't have too much time for the internet, but I will do my best to keep you updated.
For now the only competition I can give you exact information is the Junior World Orienteering Champs (JWOC). You can access it here. You can keep an eye out for my results by looking for John Fredrickson. Don't expect much from me at JWOC since I am competing against the world's best 20 year olds, and I am only 16. At the Oringen in Sweden, I will be competing in my age group, so I should have some good results. I will give you guys links to results pages when they come up.
If you want to keep track of my training, go to www.attackpoint.org and look for jfredrickson under training. (Here is the exact link). I will be logging all of my training there.
Thanks for all the encouragement. I will try to keep you all posted. _________________ Amen!

GL man!
and i saw Quote: | I ran on one of my Silvermine maps in Harrmian State Park. I had predrawn lots of circles, so I just ran to a few of them. I felt pretty tired from yesterday, so I didn't push too hard. Since I am training on Baileytown tomorrow, I didn't want to completely wear myself out. I ran a quick 4 kilometers, and then relaxed in a cold mountain stream for a few minutes. It was so refreshing, I decided to run up the road as fast as I could back to my car (see next entry). |
where is that park? i think ive been there.... _________________

Good luck Monk, go kick some serious orienting-butt! I must admit I've never heard of the sport, but it sounds kinda crazy. I like it! Any chance you'll be representing the states in a future olympics? |
