I am just curious. What exactly do you need to set up a server? _________________ Amen!

What kind of server? I'm assuming you mean a TFC server. If so, you need at least a P3 500 w 256/mb RAM or better. With a stable OS such as W2K or Linux. Next you need a fast line, preferably a T1, but anything with a 512kb UPLOAD or higher should do. _________________

Well, I my dad has what he calls a server set up for hosting websites. I was just curious if I could turn it into a TFC server.
I have all that, how do I set one up? _________________ Amen!

Just download the server software and install it. I beleive it's around 115mb. You should be able to get it at Fileplanet.
You also realize that if your server is full, the websites will crawl because the server will eat 75-90% of the processor. Unless of course you have dual procesors or a REALLY fast cpu. _________________

So basically you can do it with any computer? All you have to do is download the software and install it? cool
What is the name of the software I have to download? I couldn't find anything that looked right. _________________ Amen!

That's all well and good for the basic server setup. What I can't figure out and can't find is how the ville servers do the neat stuff like:
thetime
nextmap
timeleft
glow
I can't find anything on line or in any text files on my hard drive. Setting up a server is something I've been looking at too. The box I have has dual Pentium III 1 Ghz with 1 Gig RAM. I'll probably set it up on the T1 here at the office, that means it will only be online from 6pm edt to 8am edt and all weekend and holidays. I was thinking of calling it NaniteFog's The Ville.org Tribute Server _________________

Be careful and double check with Rob before using the Ville name. I know that he is very protective of his baby.

Yeah, I wouldn't put it up with that name without checking with him. It was just a thought. I figured I would put it out there and see what people had to say. If Rob doesn't post on this thread I'll PM him about it. _________________

Ok, I found the program and tried running it, but all it looks like is a console. I haven't been able to find a readme file, so I am clueless as to what to do.
Sorry, I am not the most knowledgeable about things like this. Any kind of instruction as to how to set up a server would be really cool! _________________ Amen!

first of all, you need to set up the server configuration file to what you want. for example....
// Use this file to configure your DEDICATED server.
// This config file is executed everytime the server changes levels.
//----------
// IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT LOGGING!: if you want to enable logging
// on your server do NOT do it in this file. Instead, do it in
// autoexec.cfg. Putting "log on" in this file can mess up your
// log files. E-mail hlds@valvesoftware.com with questions.
//---------
decalfrequency 30
sv_maxrate 6000
filterban 1
sv_rcon_minfailures 6
sv_rcon_minfailuretime 60
sv_rcon_banpenalty 0
sv_cheats 0
maxplayers 18
// disable autoaim
sv_aim 0
// player bounding boxes (collisions, not clipping)
sv_clienttrace 3.5
// disable clients' ability to pause the server
pausable 0
// default server name. Change to "Bob's Server", etc.
hostname "Rogue Element - Al's Dirty Secret"
// maximum client movement speed
sv_maxspeed 500
// Set up teamplay variables
mp_teamplay 21
// 30 minute timelimit
mp_timelimit 30
tfc_spectchat 1
// footsteps off
mp_footsteps 0
// Turn off autoteam
tfc_autoteam 0
// Turn on a prematch
tfc_clanbattle 0
tfc_clanbattle_prematch 0
tfc_balance_teams 0
tfc_balance_scores 0
//password
rcon_password "*****"
//server protected password
sv_password ""
sv_allowupload 1
sv_allowdownload 1
//spam stuff
//tfc_spam_limit 0
//tfc_spam_penalty1 0
//tfc_spam_penalty2 0
//logaddress 12.220.244.58 27001
//log on
//limited classes
cr_sniper 2
cr_hwguy 1
cr_engineer 0
put this server.cfg file into your half-life directory
Next, you need to make a shortcut to hlds.exe. Right click on it, and select make shortcut. Then go to the properties of the shortcut, and add the following:
-game tfc -maxplayers 12 (or whatever maxplayers you want)
just double click the shortcut, and you should be set. Type map avanti in the "console" to start a map. |

To be completly off point cause the problem is solved, this is what you need
CASH
GIANT GOBS OF FILTHY CASH!
You willl also need a waffle iron to keep the server warm in the winter and a big ice cube tray to keep it cold in the summer.
Hey kiddies dont try this at home _________________
