Things at their worst =(

Well right now i'm totall fuxxored. I worked like hell for the last week or so to put together a research paper that is due tomorrow. Last night I was doing some final reviews on it to make sure that everything was looking good and I forgot that I had left the window open. Well I come home today to find that it has been saved over by my sisters homework

This is going to totally destroy my grade it counts as more than the final and I'm going to fail this class if I don't get somethign done. So I guess I'm gonna try to get something done tonight, certainly won't be as good as what i had. If anyone has a way they could help or anything I would appreciate it more than you can imagine. Sorry to come here and seem like a slacker, that isn't the case. ugh.... well here goes nothing

OH and the saga gets worse. I decided that I was just gonna break down and spend the 20 bucks to by one, but guess what? I don't have a ******* credit card. Well there's been a big dump in my cheerios.

You might try searching for the name of the file on your C drive. Especially in the temp folders, as it might have a copy there.

It certainly will not her to try that...an outside chance at least.

Hope you can get it done no matter what.

Another thing to try, run the search thing from the start menu and use *.* for file name and go to advanced tab and put in a word that you know was in the paper but is unlikely to be in other files. Those temp files that get created every time you use a word processor are often out there, but they give them crazy names like ~000342dtb.tmp or some such BS. So, search for anything at all that contains a word or short phrase you know was in there.

Good luck, that sure is a bummer. I could tell you horror stories of the old days when word processors could just blow away your files without warning no matter what you did. But then, those stories wouldn't help you.

Oooh, also, there is a feature in Word about going back and looking at revisions of a document. I don't know how to do it but its a big issue because it saves all previous changes to a document right there in the .doc file. If its a Word doc, there might be hope if you can figure that out. I'll try to do some searching for you on that.

She saved her file the same as what your file was? Other that looking in the temp folder I dont know what to tell ya cept that sucks. I dont think an undelete program would work since the file is actually there just modified.

Computer, here is what I found. For a Word document do the following:

To see the full revision history, download the document, select "Track Changes" from the "Tools" menu in Word, choose "Accept or Reject Changes" and then click "Changes with Highlighting".

So, take the file with your sister's homework on it and make a backup copy. Then try this (starting at select Track Changes)on the back up. (No need to ruin her homework if it doesn't work.)

P.S. I have hopes for you on this, because Microsoft has been getting a lot of people in trouble with this. My wife works in a law firm and they got a brief or something from another firm with all the revision history intact. It gave them a lot of intel into how the other firm planned to pursue the case, so they had to tell the judge they had accidentally gotten inside info. It was a big deal. Other stories like this are in the press, too.

also if you do want to browse your temp files, go to the directory, click the last modified date selection. That way you can open the most recent ones first and maybe get lucky that way.

I hope that it work and hope it saved your butts. Something like that happen to me and I used Roxios Goback software and I can recovery any files that were modified or that had changes in it.

Roof, yeah its quite a big deal on MS Word right now. But it might go away with a Service Pack in the near future. Get this, folks who want to hide their revisions can't even do it. You can even cut and paste into a brand new Word document and it will STILL have the info in there somehow. Freaky.

My wife's firm is doing some complicated process like saving it as a .pdf file or something then emailing it, so it doesn't include revisions.

I did a quick search on Google to find an article about it that described how to do it.

Yeah, its great how Microsoft is simplifying our lives with these numerous "advanced features" that are so customizable, except that we can't at all control them.

But on the other hand, I tried to install WordPerfect on my wife's Win2000 machine and it was incredibly buggy.

Well hey, it might have cost law firms and companies millions, but the important thing is that Computer doesn't have to pull an all nighter rewriting his paper.

It wasn't a major thing, just a small essay, but the same thing happened to me a few days ago. It's due in 3 days, and I didn't want to start again. So thanks FD, it actually worked, and I've got my essay back!!

I think this is the most successful technical help I have ever provided anyone. Which is kind of sad because production support is the main component of my current job.
