Gotta go with Hoax - anything by Vonnegut. Cats Cradle is really good but any of the Kilgore Trout stuff is excellent.
Also, anything by John Irving (World According to Garp, Hotel New Hampshire) My favorite is "A Prayer for Owen Meany" (Owen talks a little like a Kilaak, but with much better spelling and grammar)
For the "forget the symbolism, just give me fun" stuff I'd suggest Robert Jordan. Thick books though.
