you mean there're other OS versions besides 3.1?? No wonder my PC still sucks after all the upgrades!

Task Manager -> Ctrl-Alt-Del (it'll pop up in XP... ehm, from what I heard, i still run 3.1), or you can select it from the popup window.

Or you can bring it up by right-clicking the empty space on your startbar?

Try right-clicking onto an empty spot on your Start Menu bar (that bar that normally runs horizontally across at the bottom of your screen where your programs are listed on). You should see something called Task Manager, click on that.

In the window that pops up, theres a tab that says Processes, click that. Search for the process that is using 100% of your CPU resource and kill that.

I dunno how ME works/looks though, so maybe someone else with it can walk him through?

also, computer always starts up with like 10 crazy things that I force close every time, gets back about 30% of ram, i dont know why they keep opening though, I searched down most of them, and found in win/sys folder, so I figured I shouldnt get rid of them, but it works fine once I close them. Examples:

mdm
cntctrl
rundll
rxmon9x
qttask
cmesys
devldr16
gmt
loadqm
motmon

how can I make these stop opening on startup? When I tried to open them manually they didnt do anything...

If you hear any grinding whatsoever, I recommend backing up your data, and give that HD a good old fashioned wipe.

If you're running 98/ME you'll need to go to:

start/programs/accessories/system tools/system monitor

With that you can at least see how much memory usage is happening. There is also a system resource monitor in the same path from your start menu.

Other than that, I'm not aware of any other ways to do what you can in 2000 with 98/ME. Hope that helps a little.

HD=Hard Drive. Open you computer in DOS mode and then type

format c:

and it will wipe out your hard drive and all the data on it. If the grinding persists, buy a new one.

Oh yeah, I forgot you can't do it quite like that.

One thing to try though, when was the last time you defragged your Hard Drive? If it's been more than a month, you'll want to do it asap.

Also, do you use any P2P file programs? (Kazaa, Morpheus, Gnutella, etc...) If you do, dump them, there are way too many weird viruses and trojan horses embedded in the programs and the files that are available from them.

To stop the programs being open at starup you can dl a program called "StartupCPL." It allows you to decide which programs you want to be open at startup. I don't remember where i got it from though..sry., but if i find where i'll post.

Well I think the comp is doomed. I tried to run regcheck and it found some messed error and "repaired" it and this somehow involved erasing my video driver...
