Computer Problems

I have problems with my comp at home. Whenever I boot it, right after the Win98 splash screen finishes, it just stops in a black screen with the little _ thing just blinking there. It has gotten worse recently to the point where I have to restart several times before a sucessful boot. I have scanned the hard drive thourghly and defragged. I have even re-installed the OS, but that was this summer, so problems may have happened since then. I just wanted to know if you guys had any suggestions before I reinstall it again.

Sounds like windoze is choking when it's trying to load something... I'd try to disable peripherals one at a time and try a boot-up each time... it's annoying, but you might find one that's choking windoze (which is definitely NOT hard to do)

Along those same lines...I would make sure that you don't have any software booting up. Disable software by going to Start -> Run --> msconfig --> Startup, then disable all the items found here. To find out which, if any software is causing your problem, go through activating each piece individually until you encounter the same problem as before. Hope this helps...

I had that same problem. But it occurs when I shut down my pc. I had to update my Bios settings because I did a fresh install of windows 98. I guess when I did that it earsed some of my important files from my motherboard resources, plus my pc didn't shutdown properly and standby was missing from my shutdown menu. My pc model is a Compaq Presaro. But the problem is gone and my pc shuts down properly and goes back into standby mode. Thank heavens
