I have a "free" OC12 connection from my school. As free as my tuition is... oh well.

I know of one organization that would... EROS (Earth Resources Observation Systems)Data Center near Souix Falls SD. They handle ALL the LandSat space imagery there... about 4 years ago I went on a tour of the place... they had at least 4 "Towers"... a hexagon-shaped tower that held 6,000 50-GByte tapes(each)... and they had millions of tapes in boxes in storage... What really frightened me was when they said their data totals will grow eponentially! EXPONENTIALLY! They already measure their data storage in whatever you call the units larger than TBytes. (PetaBytes?) Wow.
Every image the satelites had taken since the 60's... if they needed to send very many of those out, they'd need something like that!

I wanna get a job there

The lines or "pipes" are fiber optic lines that are used as internet backbones. Most ISP's use multiple T3's from different carriers for redundancy purposes..

You forgot the "grandaddy" line.. OC-255 = 13.21Gbps

The higher ocs are only used for major servers and isps. I don't even think any colleges have oc192s. I think my isp is ran off *only* 5 oc-48s. When you see advertizements for oc-3 servers they are lieing. Just look at the crappy neotf servers. Those things run worse than a 256-256 connection. They are either many servers bundled onto one oc3 or a fractional oc3 (or just a shitty server op that doesn't know how to network )

I'm playing off of a dual OC3 network, and I must admit..it's pretty sweet. Especially because TV5 is on the same LAN. A lag over 25 is huge for me there.

Lucky you, I wish that I could have a lag like that to even one server. But mine is about 20 times greater than that.

I've had pings in the single digits on servers in Minneapolis and Chicago, but most of the time I'm in the 50s regardless.

I have pings in the single digits when I run my own server! No matter how big a pipe you have, you'll experience some lag just from the distance the information has to travel. I normally ping 50-100, but on servers far far way my ping will average up to the low 200's. Man I wish I had an OC-255 hehe. Think of all the porn you could dload... JK!!!!
