What model Compaq do you have? Also, what kind of hard drive are you attempting to install. They are most likly talking about the jumpers on the hard drive which define if it's to be the master or slave. When I find out your model number I'll be sure to get you some exact information. E-mail me a torak369@hotmail.com or post it here.

There should be a diagram with your new hard drive, or on it that tells you how to set the jumper block (little black or white thing over two pins on the side of your HD.) There are specific orders for master and slave HDs. Normally you set the HD on the end of the ribbon cable to be the master, and the following ones as slaves. RTFM in this case would apply.

Yeah but what the hard drive pamphlet tells you and what you should really do are sometimes two different things. If we knew what hard drive you were installing, we could help you more. Mine is a Western Digital and the pamphlet was wrong about my jumper setting. No fair, I want a slave too! I have an all in wonder. . .

First off you better make sure you can upgrade that compaq. And then, ram the harddrive in there threatening severe bodily harm if it doesn't get with the program and add itself without any trouble.

Usually the process is like this for adding a second hard drive to your computer:
1) Turn off your PC and open it up
2) Look inside your PC and find your current hard drive, and where it connects to your motherboard. The ribbon cable that connects it will probably have another connector that's not hooked up to anything.
3) Take out your current hard drive and look near where the ribbon connector plugs into it. There should be 6-12 pins on the back with a jumper over two of the pins. If you're lucky, the HD will be labelled with the different jumper settings you need to know: Master (MA), slave (SL), and cable select (CS).
4) Change your existing hard drive to either MA or CS.
5) Attach your new hard drive to the ribbon cable, making sure to read its jumpering instructions. If you jumpered your old HD as MA, then jumper your new disk as SL. If you jumpered your old HD as CS, do the same to the new disk.
6) Put the disks back into your computer and reassemble everything.
7) Turn on your computer. If you did most of this right, it should start up properly. If something is wrong with your cabling or jumpering, your computer might do nothing at all, beep at you, or say "No boot device found" or something like that.
As your computer is starting up, go into the CMOS setup (usually, DEL, F1, F2, or something like that during the memory check)
9) In the CMOS, have it detect your new hard disk (the slave). Your old disk should already be displayed. It should display the right size (in MB) and geometry (Cylinders/Heads/Sectors) as your disk manual says it is.
10) Save the CMOS and restart your computer.
11) You should now see your new disk in Windows. Partition it with FDISK if you want, then format it, and you're ready to go.
