Voice Comm Fix From Valve
Monday, September 24, 2001, 21:20 | The Warthog
Thanks to [STIVAN]Mahogny, for letting us know that Clan STIVAN site has been updated with a suggested fix from Mike Dussault of Valve Software. Mike, who is reported to have done a majority of the coding for the Voice Comm, provided "a 'fix' that makes HL/CS run with DirectSound instead of WaveIn."
Simply add "+voice_dsound 1" (without quotes) on the command line so the command looks something like this: "c:sierrahalf-lifehl.exe +voice_dsound 1"
The fellas at Clan STIVAN report this works well in WinXP (the only OS they tried this with), and on the same page, they have the original fix they offered up (more) yesterday.

At 09/26/2001 10:02 AM we wrote - How to set up the built in Voice
Communications under Half-Life Version 1.1.0.8.

The first and probably most important requirement is a soundcard that
supports full duplex operations. This means the soundcard can record
and playback sounds at the same time. In general this rules out most ISA
based soundcards and some early PCI based cards. Some example of cards
that support full duplex operations:

The SoundBlaster Live! Family of cards
Aureal Vortex 1 and 2 based cards (Diamond Monster MX300, Turtle Beach
Montego II are a few of them)
Hercules Game Theater XP
Philips Acoustic Edge

If you are unsure of whether or not your soundcard supports full duplex
operations you will need to contact the hardware manufacturer for more
information.

If the soundcard supports full duplex, the next step is to set it up in
the game. You can use the Voice Tweak utility to do this. To access
this utility go to Start, Programs and then locate the Sierra Program
group. Under Half-Life or Counter-Strike you should find an icon for
Voice Setup. Click this to start the Voice Tweak program. If no sound is
heard from your microphone or is very low try putting a check in the
box labeled "Enable 20 dB hardware gain."

If you have continued problems getting sound from your microphone click
the button labeled System Setup and follow the onscreen prompts.

If you have problems running the Voice Setup program:

The Voice Setup may have problems if a secondary audio device is
present (e.g. a modem). If you have problems running the utility (e.g. the
"Can't initialize waveOut" error), try the following:

1. Try disabling modem sound device in Device Manager. To do this:
-Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Properties from the menu.
-For Windows 9X and ME click the Device Manager tab, for Windows 2000
click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.
-Locate the listing for Sound, Video and Game Controllers and click the
plus sign next to it.
-Double-click the listing for Wave Device for Voice modem and in the
properties for this device set the device usage to Disable.
-Click okay on this window and close the device manager.

2. Try turning down audio hardware acceleration. To do this:
-Click on Start and select Run.
-Type in DXDIAG and click ok.
-Click on the tab labeled Sound.
-Lower the slider bar labeled Hardware Sound Acceleration Level to the
far left, so it is set to No Acceleration.
