I was thinking of setting up my comp to run as a dedicated server during the like 7 hrs a day I'm not home... How do you go about doing this, and having like admin powers and stuff? If i just choose ded. server in create game, its just 1 map, and kicks to dos window... How do you even choose multiple maps?
Help me, and I may make it like a daytime alternitive to TV1...
If you really wanted to I could put it in the whole system n' everything, so that the ville admins had power and it recorded into the ville stats. Honestly, right now all my computer does from 7am till 3 pm is run Flying Toasters. ^_~

Most home broadband connections like DSL or cable still do not provide the high-speed bandwidth and stability that T1's and above give. Not to say it isn't possible, but once 10+ players come on, it might become lag heaven.
You can go to adminmod.org to install the mods and plugins on your dedicated server. It comes with instructions too on how to setup mapcycles etc.

I'm also wondering about starting a server in the near future. I've got a dedicated OC12 connection here at school that runs out to an OC3 backbone that runs down through Chicago.
Is that good enough to get a good latency overall, I know sometimes people have a hard time running servers off of university LANs. We haven't had any connection problems since they upgraded one of the sections of the backbone last July.

No, I don't have a T1, but I wasn't planning on having like a 20 limit like the main servers do, maybe just like 5 - 10... its still better than 0 from 7am - 5pm |

Snag, I dunno about your university, but it is actually impossible to run a server off our network at OSU. Apparently people abused it and VAPORIZED the bandwidth. I mean, you get about 20,000 people runnin servers, it kills the speed REAL quick.
Just a bit of info

I know it's possible here, it's just a matter of not allowing in game uploads from the server. Because, if the network sees that I'm sucking up bandwidth by creating a portal (like P2P file sharing programs do when you share files) it throttles my available bandwidth. Downloads are fine, but they totally rate limit guys using FTP servers and P2P file sharing, where our bandwidth is getting the brunt of the file transfer.
