ok so my comp has been pissin me off a lot lately, for example it takes FOREVER to start once i log in and what not...like it takes 15 min just to show all the desktop icons and what not. also i check the CPU usage and it spikes to 100% all the time and but then it goes down to like 15% and goes between that and 0%...
i wanna restart this comp to factory settings like i said in a previous thread...JD said the command was Ctrl+F11 but that isnt working so someone help me out wit restarting it to factory settings or how to make things better for my comp cause i dont wanna hafta call up Dell cause they charge for software problems

Have you updated your BIOS latley ???
The last time I did it reset my FSB. I went from 2.2Ghz to 1.2Ghz.

Try F10 or F8 Also run a ton of spyware programs. They will eat up all your memory as they are running in the background. USe spyboy searcg & destroy and awdaware. Both great programs. Also look for a couple more as they all seem to do a different thing.

If nothing has changed (software or hardware) and the system took an unexpected dive, This is how I solve this problem.
1. run spyware/adaware, I use Adaware
2. run a registry cleaner program, I use Registry Cleaner
Those two steps help alot, but if it still isn't up to par:
3. Defrag your HDD
4. This is the last resort to the last resort: Restore Windows back to a date your pc was known to work good.
5. Last resort:Backup/reformat
I'm not good at restoring or repairing any kind of software issues. I usually end up reformatting once a year or so.
These steps are VERY general and vague. I figured it might give you a place to start, IDK.

***ONLY*** update your BIOS if you HAVE too!!!
Did it once, and I was unable to use any ethernet device on it for a week (until I rolled back the drivers)

You could always make a backup you know. Like next time you reformat and everything is all set and installed, run a backup to either an external Harddrive or to CD(s) or DVD(s)
It takes some of the time out of reinstalling a lot of stuff over and over again.

Basic Input/ Output Settings ( i think)
if there is any doubt about how fast its running go to "run" and type "dxdiag" . that will give you the low down on cpu speed and some other fun stuff.

I use the corporate version to ghost the 150 machines in my network. For each type of machine, I create the perfect machine (!) with fresh updates, virus updates (for Norton AntiVirus), all the necessary software etc and then I make an image of it. Takes about 4Gb for each ghost image. We have about six different types of PC in our place so you need different images.
The home one works really well!...The image can then be dumped to a DVD for later use...

Doesn't Ghost(cast) cost quite a bit though?!
I've used it quite often @ work and school. I PM'd him with some info to do a backup through the XP OS.

ok i rebooted my comp to the factory settings...JD was right on the command...but the internet is still messed up. it takes almost 20 minutes for it to connect to my lan server...im gonna call up the company 2morrow and see whats goin on

I know this is too late, BUt you may have also tried using "msconfig" to disable all startup programs. I know HP and DELL like to install a ton of 'bloatware' (useless ssoftware) on their PC's. And all those programs are set to start on startup, thus slowing down startup times and CPU processes. msconfig, you can disable all or some of the startup programs.

well everything is ok now...i think it was some kind of virus or something that norton didnt find...so i decided to stop using norton, im d/l a program that the University gives out for free that is suppposed to be really good so im gonna use that cause norton is not my friend nemore
