How do you view a demo once it has been recorded? Are they .wmv, .avi, or some other video format?

And if not, how would one convert to a video format?

Depends on what game your playing. All demos in hl/hl2 related games save as .dem files.

To play them, in dod I believe the console command is
play nameofdemo.dem
Or, if you want to be able to fast forward etc
viewdemo nameofdemo.dem

In dod:s it's
playdemo nameofdemo.dem

Think that's right at any rate.

Ok.

but is there a way to convert those .dem files so that I could essentially put them on a CD and watch them from Widows Media Player or even Quicktime, without having to use STEAM?

there's a command that dumps a bunch of bmps that take up gigs of room which you can compile into a video. You can also use fraps which records your screen into an uncompressed avi(can be gigs if recording for a few minutes).

Demos cannot be directly converted to regular media types.

In order to convert them, you must first play the demo
Then you use the startmovie command (I forget the exact syntax, I think it's: startmovie 30 demo - which basically means start making individual frames as bmp files at 30 frames a second starting at demo.bmp).

This'll create hundreds of bmps in your dod folder which takes up a LOT of space - took me about 50 gigs to do the cup video this way.

Then you use a program to turn the individual frames into movies
