Seems to be some missing information in the thread. The lower end Conroe processors are already available, though they're the ones with the 2MB L2 Cache.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=50001157+2010340343+1050722265&Submit=ENE&Subcategory=343

If you want the ones with the 4MB L2 cache (E6600/E6700), probably have to wait a little bit. Although, from what's been posted on Anandtech, the E6300/E6400 overclock quite well even with stock cooling.

I think you need 240pin DDR2 RAM for that motherboard.

everythings good, except the HDD, I'd go with this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144701

IT's faster than the seagate, bigger cache, and cheaper, and bigger storage..

as far as the mobo goes: here's a few i found that may suit your needs too:

I'll tag along with something that I'm looking at for a budget/media box build.

Already got a $50 160GB HD from Outpost a while back.

Case: Antec NSK2400
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811129014

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2 m-atx (waiting on reviews to see if it's any good)
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813128016

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819115005

Memory: 512MB Kingston, basic ram
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820134044

DVD Burner: NEC
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827152058

Total before shipping: $462 + $50 HD = $512

Really wanted FW on the mobo, but not many cheap m-atx intel mobos seem to have that. Guess I'll have to add in card for that.

It's a box with electronics that you can play games with, but that's not important right now

Hola Backwardsman!!

Few things bother me in your setup!!!

First, you're buying a X1800XT video card (that is ok), but your motherboard does not support crossfire, it only support SLI (which is related to nvidia card). Maybe it is not in your plan FOR NOW to have dual vid/card but the first thing that you have to think when youre buying a new comp is UPGRADEABILITY!!!!

I know what i'm talking about, I did the big mistake a few year ago of buying an end of the line CPU (the amd 3200XP ). It is still doing good in todays game with my X800XT-PE but i'm stuck with it now, without any possibility of upgrading my CPU without changing my whole system (new mobo, new video card, memory, etc...).

So, if I was you, i would look for:

1) a motherboard that support crossfire (so you'll be able to add a 2nd x1800xt later if you want) (crossfire)

or

2) buying a nvidia card instead of an ATI if you absolutely want this MB(same as for #1, in this case youll be able to add a second nvidia card later, if you want) (SLI).

Second, that is a personnal choice but I think I would buy a slower CPU (like the E6300 or E6400) (which are still very fast) and with the money that I saved that way, i would buy a better video card. You can have the E6400 for 242$, which is 127$ less then the E6600. You can use that money to buy an X1900XTX instead (349$). (7900GTX would be great too but a little bit more expensive) (475$)

That way, youll have an high end video card, a pretty good processor and a lot of space to upgrade your CPU in a few year (Until then, the price of the new Conroe CPU and of the E6800 will be a lot lower). For now, they are too expensive (considering price/performance compare to the E6400). This setting will allow you to play any game at max setting, believe me!!!!

That is what I would do but, from now on, it is up to you my friend...

Good shopping

Edit: I forgot to tell you... As previously said by others, if I was you, I would wait for Vista and DX10 video card before buying a new system. But again, I'm not you!!! But, if you dont wanna wait and you absolutely want to buy your new comp today, thats what I would do!!!!
