Need Some Input

Following this academic year I will be atteneding college, University of Minnesota - Duluth. I plan on majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Anyone out there majoried in this feild? If so any input... seems like it will be a lot of work and I want to know what I am getting myself into. UMD is in the top 5 best engineering schools in country if that helps. Also how is the job market for this feild? I am aware of a lot of technology jobs being sent to India due to cheap labor...This is for hardware not software by the way, meaning I will design/build circuits for computers, cell phones, etc. Thanks for the help.

Sorry I have no input for you but I'll also be going to college next year and I was accepted to UMD and i've heard that it's a really really nice school and that it's got a huge campus, i've really only heard good things about it but I might be going to Penn State as a business major so yea.....not relevant to the answer u wanted but i'm now a part of the forums so i figured i'd add something lol

Just kidding Duluth is a really awesome town. I just don't like the school because UMD and the university I coach for are bitter rivals.

lol, no i'm not in MN i'm in NY and it looks like i'll end up at penn state, two other people that i know got rejected from UMD and are both straight A students which was kinda weird so Richter i'm with u on this one....

Well can't help you much with UMD besides you better have a nice pair of drinking boots. Also if something happens choose wisely and don't end up at St. Cloud State, after being here for 4 years I really don't think I got the education i was looking for.

In regards to your choice of ECE:

If you really, honestly WANT to be an Electrical and Computer Engineer, then you should be fine. It will take a lot of work whether you're extremly gifted at math/science or if you're only average. Most people who start out as engineers drop out of their first or second years because most (if not all) engineering programs require you to take 2 years of requirements before they let you really take classes that apply to your engineering degree. What makes people drop is not the engineering courses specific to their major, but all the other things they have to take.

For example, I am a sophomore in chemical engineering at Oregon State...right now, I'm taking Statics, Physics 213 (which focuses on Electromagnetism), Applied Differential Equations and Organic Chemistry. Now realistically, I will only really use information from TWO of those classes in the future; 2 out of 4, see what I mean?

You will find that your freshman year is pretty easy in any engineering major your choose; sophomore year significantly gets tougher. I remember as a freshman I went to the library like twice a week; now I go almost every day.

One more thing...do not think you have to be a super-genius to be an engineer. In high school, I only made it up to Pre-Calculus and my SAT scores aren't ridiculously high; in fact they are about average. If you put in the effort, and really LIKE doing it, then you will be successful at engineering.
