Reformat, restore help

Ok guys, here it goes. I have two 80 GB seagate Hard Drives. I just reformated C, my main HD. DId a clean install of windows, set windows up on its own 10 GB partition. the only problem is...i backed everything up on my second HD, D. I can see all the stuff in there...but i cant use it? Anyone know whats going on?

I try to use something (nero for instance, to restore everything from my backup Cd's) and i double click on it, and nothing happens. HOw can i get all my stuff restored? this is the first time i've done a clean install and had everything backed up...I insert my backup cd's and i see all the info on them, but i'm not sure how to restore all of it

I swear this will be the last time i ask for help this month

edit: Ok, i think i may have figured out the restore fr0m CD part. STill wondering about the backup's on my HD, what i did was just copied all the information on one HD and sent it to the other.

if you just copied everything, then copy it back to your main hard drive.

tried that, it missed a file here and there....i'm thinking from the corruption? anyway, i have to uninstall and reinstall all my games, except for steam

How was the backup done? Was it through an application or did you just "copy-and-paste" the files to your D Drive?

If you had copied and pasted the files, you'll prob need to reinstall those programs in your new C Drive since the Windows registry will not have the old info in your new install.

But you can prob still copy the data files back to the new drive and re-use them after reconfiguring the correct paths where the new files are located.

yeah, most programs cannot be copied from one machine, or HD, to a another. A clean install of everything is needed just to be on the safe side. Like Monkey said, there is information loaded in the registry during an install that doesn't make it with a file copy.

Hope you don't, or didn't, lose too much info.

Alright, i have things back up to normal....5 hours later. lol. Next time i'll do a more thorough backup

Next time you can try the built in File and Settings Transfer wizard in XP, I think it allows you to copy all your actual installs over to the new build as well so you dont have to reinstall, ive personally never tried it but I believe thats what its there for.

This was taken from Technet, You will still have to reinstall first, but then if you run this you wont have to reconfigure everything, in the case of games tho everything is usually saved in some config file so just copying that over after reinstall usually does the trick.
