i need some help.

im going to the police academy starting in january.
i have to pass a physical fitness test.
i kick ass at everything except the running.

i need to run 1.5 miles in 12:30

at about .75 miles, my legs tense up so bad i can barely walk.

i've tried streching, longer warm ups, making sure i drink enough water, etc. but nothing seems to work.
its not even the distance that is hard, its running that far in the time allotted.

if any one could give me advice/tips on how to get my distance up, please let me know. i only have about 3 weeks or so to get this down, or im screwed

the best advice i can give you is to see a doctor about that leg thing.

It doesn't sound normal, i'd have a doc check it out before you start doin anything to drastic.

no insurance.

its just cramping. ive never been a runner. ive been body building for a year and a half, so running is a huge shock to my muscles, which are used to short, explosive movements.

The best I can think is to simply push your self a bit farther each day. Dont try to do the entire 1.5 in the first days. If you can get to .75, next work up to .9 mile, or even one mile, if you try to make it up to an addtional .25 mile each week you should be good

Shoval I dont know what is best for you but I go through a phase when running long distances where after a little bit I think I cant go on...but I keep at it and in a little while it goes away and I can run on with out problem.

are you on a low salt diet?

Good luck on your bid to go to the academy

Try changing your breathing. Breath on the steps, out for 2 counts, in for 2. Good luck Shoval

I'm with George, I think repitition but not pushing it will help your muscles get used to what they have to do. Run, and do it often, but if you get into too bad of shape, stop for the time being. I bet you'll see an improvement.

I might have to agree, and I would quote Gwen when I say "The **** is bananas, B A N A N A S."

I think all the advise above combines can help in the long run (pun intended).

like others said, go a little bit more past what you can do each day.

One thing that really gets me when i run is a get bad stumoch cramps if i eat anything within 4 hours before running. I have to run a mile every day for gym and if i even have a small breakfast 3 hours before it I still get a really bad cramp because theres no blood in my stumoch to digest my food.

I use to be a ballet dancer, many years in the boarding school. A lot of running outside, toeshoes etc. I use to have crumps in my cuffs. Sometimes knock me off the pointas. Water, stretching is all important, however, I had to take a lot of summpliments. Iron, Calcium. potassium, magnesium. You have to find the right combinaitons. Go to the store that specialises in vitamins. 3 weeks might not be enough. Take it extensively. Good luck.
