Check out my new skill. Flipping a balisong. Here's where you can find the video. http://balisong.theasylum.org/ Then click on Bayoublaster and the video is in that folder. Let me know what you think. _________________ The Ville "Heals Me, Hurts You" award winner for most Gorge Heal Spray kills in a 24 hour period. 6-9-04 |

how do you learn to do that so well without cutting off your finger when first learning? _________________ R.I.P. Blue |

Of course I'm not a ranger. I'm not cool enough. But I do like that t-shirt. If anyone else is interested in learning, I can post some links on how to learn and how to keep all your fingers. To save your fingers you usually tape the edge when you're first learning. In that video I am flipping with a "live" blade. Also, I actually do have a cut on my hand in the video, you just can't see it because it isn't that big. And even though I've gotten better, I do manage to tag myself with the edge once in a while. _________________ The Ville "Heals Me, Hurts You" award winner for most Gorge Heal Spray kills in a 24 hour period. 6-9-04 |

Pretty neat. When I'm bored at school (all the time) I twirl my pencil but won't ever try it with a knife, I'd like to keep my digits. |

For those interested in learning the art of manipulating a balisong, I have a few links and tips.
-First and most importantly SAFETY FIRST!
If you choose to flip a live blade, be careful. You should ALWAYS remember there is a sharp edge in play. If you practice and be careful, you dramatically decrease your chances of being cut.
-Second, it is called the "Safe Handle" for a reason. Figure out which is the safe handle on your knife and use that handle to flip. On most knives available in the US, the safe handle is the handle WITHOUT the latch.
-Keep bandages handy. Everyone cuts themselves sometimes.
-Many people start learning with a blade taped up to render it mostly inert. I did this and still do tape the edge every so often if I think I may need to while learning a new technique. Use a good quality electrical tape or something similar and be sure the tip is covered.
This next tip is not so much about safety as it is about common sense.
MAKE SURE WHATEVER KNIFE YOU GET IS LEGAL WHERE YOU LIVE!
Many jurisdictions lump Balisongs, or butterfly knives as most people know them, in the same category as switchblades. They are illegal in many places. Many people consider them to only be used as weapons, which is an untrue stereotype that came around because of bad guys in movies. Remember, don't play around with weapons laws, they are no joking matter. Many cities and local areas have their own laws, check all levels to be sure.
One other thing to consider before taking up this hobby. A good knife costs money. In the US, you really can't get a good balisong for less than around $70. The standard is the Benchmade Model 42 which is listed at around $200, but often sells for much less on the internet. Two knives in a lower price range are the Spyderco Spyderfly and the Typhoon which was designed by famous knife designer Darrel Ralph. Both the Benchmade and the Typhoon are excellent knives. I've never handled a Spyderfly so I can't comment on them but they are made by Spyderco a highly respected company in the knife world.
Now, if you would still like more information on manipulation techniques or balisongs in general, here are some great resources. These are the places I got my knowledge.

Blade Forums has a forum specifically for Balisongs. Several experts as well as custom bladesmiths post here, they can answer pretty much any question you have and can give you advice.

I'll post more links on where to look for information about the specific models I mentioned later. _________________ The Ville "Heals Me, Hurts You" award winner for most Gorge Heal Spray kills in a 24 hour period. 6-9-04 |
