Your FPS can only go up to 100 in DoD unless you enable developer mode. So fps_max can be as high as you want, but you will only get what your computer can put out. Does your friend use a low resolution when he plays? The lower your resolution is, the higher your FPS will get.

Here are some commands you can run to get higher FPS:
cl_particlefx 0 (0=no fx|1=no weather fx|2=full fx)
ati_npatch 0
ati_subdiv 0
rate 20000
cl_updaterate 20
cl_cmdrate 30
fps_max 99.0
r_decals 3000
cl_himodels 1
r_drawviewmodel 1
r_dynamic 1
r_mirroralpha 1
precache 1
cl_allowupload 1
cl_allowdownload 1
cl_download_ingame 1
r_mmx 0
net_graph 3
net_graphpos 1
gl_texturemode gl_linear_mipmap_nearest
gl_picmip 0
gl_playermip 0
gl_max_size 256
gl_ztrick 0
gl_spriteblend 1
gl_dither 1
gl_cull 1
gl_keeptjunctions 0
gl_lightholes 1

Also look around under the 3D options for v-sync. You might have to scroll down the list to find it. It might sayd "Wait for vertical refresh" or "Wait for V-Sync" or "Vertical Sync" or something along those lines.

Another thing you can do is to turn off the map with the m key when you don't need it. Typing "stopsound" every once in a while to clear all the ambient sound help, too.

Anyway, I hope that helps.

I play at 800X600 and I used to get 60fps. It seems like whenever I messed with the config, it wouldn't get any better. So then I turned off V-Sync and now i currently get 100fps. So by just turning off the V-Sync, I gained 40 more fps. #2gunfire

V-Sync caps your FPS to your refresh rate, which XP locks at 60 by default. So with V-Sync on, you would get 60 FPS, even if your card could go to 100.

And as long as your card supports it, use Open GL. Half-Life doesn't support Software and D3D very well.

Half-life can only do 100 fps max, even with developer on. The number you see is not how many fps you are actually doing, but how many your computer could do wi there was not a cap in HL.

If you ever use autos in DoD I'd suggest using a lower fps_max. I use a max of 60, because when I get in a firefight that is about the max I get. If your fps goes down by 10 or 20 in a firefight it can cause the gun, especially the BAR to skip.

Also:
cl_updaterate 20
cl_cmdrate 30

They have nothing to do with fps, just choke and loss.

Those rates are made for 56k connections and are the bare minimum allowed by leagues. If you have a decent ping here, you can move those rates up to 101 max. You'll probably find you hit people on their models, instead of a little behind them. Mess around with your rates, as long as you have no loss, you'll be fine.
