The original wasn't about listening to your parents. For the most part, the kids' parents were just as bad as they were, and it was their own fault their kids behaved that way.

i know. it was a joke.
You could say each one personifies a deadly sin/unpleasant trait and each's punishment is their own fault, but Dahl himself said the point was to get kids to read.
And yes the parents are equally at fault for their children's behavior. In the book charlie is pointed our as being "unspoiled". |
