I want to upgrade my system and I just need some advice. The first thing on my list of upgrades is RAM. I wan't to buy 1GB of RAM (preferably 1 stick in case I want to upgrade in the future). I believe I have this motherboard: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=1382949.
I just don't know what type of RAM I should get for this. So if anyone has any advice or knows what I should get, please post.

I would reccomend Corsair XMS series, but not sure if they make it in pc266 ecc checking.

Might want to upgrade your MB to except a faster ram as it is cheaper or around the same price and much faster. I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend and how much you want to upgrade .

Find out which board you have for sure, if it supports dual channel then your handicapping your performance running only 1 dimm.

I know it is an Elitegroup 848P-A P4.

So if I were to upgrade the motherboard, what would I have to do? The only thing I've ever replaced on a desktop is a graphics card, so I don't really know what it would take to upgrade a motherboard. Would I have to reinstall windows or something like that?

Well it depends if you want a fresh reinstall..If not you basically just swap out the board and install the new system drivers that come with the board.

That sounds pretty easy. I'll look for a good motherboard. I just need to figure out what CPU I have...

Thanks for the help.

Edit: How about this motherboard and this RAM?

That will work . Asus makes a very good MB + it would give you room to upgrade at a later date. Not sure what proccessor you have, but you would have room to upgrade that at a later date.

Like I said it all depends on how much $$$$ you want to spend. I know they have upgrade packages of MB,Ram and proccessor for around 200-300 range.

Right now, I'm only willing to spend less than $200.

The processor I have now is a P4 3Ghz HT and it works fine. Everything else is good right now, so I don't think I want to replace the whole system...
