Quote:
A new form of matter is not the same thing as a new phase of matter. There are still only 4 phases of matter (although there are a series of subphases in each one, but nothing easily detectable).

At low temperatures, matter acts very strangely. Fermions and bosons (differing in the total spin of the particle) act radically different. For those who don't know, spin has nothing to do with something actually spinning. Spin is a fundamental property of subatomic particles that has no macroscopic analog (mass, charge, velocity, momentum, etc. have obvious macroscopic analogs).

And for those who think this research has no point: people said the same things about the material properties of semiconductors a few decades ago. Same with the subatomic properties of heavy atoms seventy years ago, or that pesky 2 slit experiment that defied conventional wisdom about 150 years ago. Just realize that studying the unknown properties of different forms of matter in different conditions yielded us nearly every great scientific breakthrough in history.

BEC's, superconductors, and superfluids are some of the most likely candidates to give us new technologies. Don't knock it.

apparently there are more comments on this at slashdot: http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/06/23/223213&tid=146&tid=162&tid=14 but it mainly looks greek to me..

If they are looking for a new type of matter, maybe they should check the back of my closet.

All I know is, when a bullet leaves the muzzle of a gun a 2500+ fps, it's gonna kill someone or something..

It didn't kill me, but it sure did hurt...

That's the last time I let you test any of your theories on me. Now where is my $10?
