Ok, a little quiz for you...
A person can transport by itself enough food and water to survive 4 days in the desert.
If that person as to do a 6 days trip across the desert.
How many people (and how) will it take to help that person making it across the desert and those who as help making it back to the starting point? _________________

I think I have it!!!
First, you have to send a guy at one day of walk... He drop there 2 day of food (so he has 1 day of food left for his come back).
Second, you send 2 guys at 2 days of walk. They drop there 1 day of food each (food for 2 days). They have 1 day of food left (each). They come back to their starting point, taking on their way back the food that has been left by the 1st person at the 1 day point!
Now, you send your moron who want to walk across the desert!!! He walk 2 days (2 days of food left), and at that point, he pick the 2 days of food that has been left by the second "sherpas" (so now he have 4 days of food, enough to reach his end point!!! And there, he open a good cold beer, and drink it!!!! Yeaaaaaaah!
End of the story!!!
Thanks, it was fun!!! _________________ S Q U I D L Y

This isn't not the answer... because you use 4 people total and the "original" answer is less then that. Sorry, try again you had some part of the answer... _________________

Given infinite time, only 1 person is necessary.
Just make the guy make 1 day walks, dropping 2 days of food there, coming back, again and again. Then, he can do the same thing from his first camp, making one day walks to his second 'camp', dropping 2 days of food, twice, coming back to his first camp to eat and stuff. And then go back to his second camp, and from there make a 4 days walk to his destination.
Sorry squidly, you almost had the answer |

Wow, I didn't think of that... here's the "original" answer...
Answer: 3 person total (Ex: A, B and C)
Day 1: C give ration to A, B and C. So A and B still have 4 ration and C still have 1 left.
Day 2: C with is 1 ration left goes back to the start. B give ration to A and B. So A have still 4 ration and B 2 ration left.
Day 3 and 4: B with is 2 ration left goes back to the start. A goes alone 2 more days with his 4 ration left.
Day 5 and 6: C and B are both at the starting point. A with is 2 ration left goes to the end of the trip and arrive without any ration left. _________________

Only one person is necessary. Just give him a lot of water and no food and he will be able to make the trip by himself with only water. |

The question should have been (for you answer to be better than mine) :
How many people (and how) will it take to help that person making it across the desert and those who as help making it back to the starting point in one single trip?
Else, it can be easily exploited by a simple loophole.
Still, nice little puzzle |
