OMG Microsoft completly screwed over my computer... I was downloading the latest updates - since I was notified that there were updates available fpr my compter from the automatic update wizard. For some unknown reason, the updater attempted to download the nVidia nForce sound drivers - it failed to do so. Now I have absolutely no sound and I can't find the right driver to download!
AHH! Can anyone help me out here? I have a NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit... I hate microsoft.
Oh, btw, the MSN "security" patch also screwed over my comp and slowed it down to a crawl...
Thanks for any help! |

Ah! I finally figured it out! Don't worry, I fixed everything and it appears to be working well now. |

Us americans give canucks a bit of extra time before we respond just to make sure that the canuck has time to make sure the speaker cord is plugged in.

Nah... For some odd reason the drivers were uninstalled when Microsoft attempted to update... I wasn't able to find the right drivers and I had to search for about 4 hours or so before I found the right software... I wish I was given a CD with the drivers on it when I bought the computer... But there was no such luck... Oh well. It's fixed now, and yes DaKon the wires were plugged in properly - that was one of the first things I checked actually . |

Heh... I run an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe board with WinXP and absolutely hate how picky it is to get all the software/drivers set-up right to allow one to actually use the on-board nForce sound. When it works, it's pretty good quality sound, but yeah... WinXP continually insists that I need to "update" to drivers from 2002 despite the fact that I'm using the ones from either Asus or nVidia (wish I could remember... think it's nV) that are from 2004 and ACTUALLY work. _________________ -EvilGenius V$^PK

Naw.. Just panic in the park.
Evil, I have the same motherboard and MS used to drive me nuts with the constant reminders to upgrade the nVidia audio driver also, but it has stopped for some reason. I'm still on service pack 1, as I refused to
install 2, from all the nightmares I've heard about it.
I can't overly tell all of you guys to BACK UP YOUR HD IMAGE each time before installing ANY drivers, new programs, ect.
A lot of this stuff modifies the registers and it can be a bear to fix if something happens. I know you can use system restore, but even it can be limited as to what it can do to bring a system back to life.
I personally use ACRONIS True Image to make a complete copy of my system drive to another redundant HD, so I can be back to my 'old' setup within 15-20 min.
I also used Black Viper's suggestions and created another partition for XP, and it has 5 selectable boot schemes that controls which system processes will be running in the background while your using your system.
You can select the aggressiveness (spelling?) so minimal processes are used to 'speed up' your system. His regular web site is down, but here is another link that has the info..
http://web.archive.org/web/20041128094512/http://www.blackviper.com/
Using his suggestions has been real helpful for me.
Let me get off the soap box now..
Ol' Sarge says.. "Listen, MORON. I said BACK IT UP first, then move on.."

good tips. I haven't had any issues since I've done a restore so it appears to be fixed. Any driver updates that microsoft sends my way from now on I'm just going to ignore. If I need anything I'll go to the card's official site rather than use microsoft. |

I had trouble getting my on board sound working, too. It still does weird things, thought. The little sound icon on the task bar likes to disappear for some reason. _________________

Microsoft will only give you the latest certified drivers. Which, sometimes aren't always the ones that work with what you are doing. When installing, take your nic offline, so no drivers are slapped on without your consent. I also have auto updates shut off. I will download updates when I feel like I have an issue. _________________ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
