ok my friend is having a problem with his steam account. well he has 3 different accounts but only 1 steam. but i dont think thats the problem. when he installs steam it doesnt show that he has half-life(first not second) installed so when he tries to install mods like ns it doesnt show up on his list. his hl2, css, hl2:dm all show up but not hl or cs or any mods. i have reinstalled windows and reinstalled everything else. i think the problem is that he hasnt registered it but that could jsut be my stupidity. he also doesnt know with name he has registered it under but we have tried all 3.
the only things i can think of are reformat, go into the registry(which i really dont want to do), or tech support(which he doesnt want to do), and last but not least register. which i left to him but i have a feeling he didnt do that. 
any help would be appreciated

He needs to enter his half life cd key.
If he doesnt have one, he needs to buy the back catalog.
retail hl2 doesnt give you hl1.
steam hl2 bronze doesnt give you hl1.

and his cd-key has already been entered unless when you install it again you have to reenter it then he has to do that
