Trout slaps are very common on IRC and slapping somebody with a trout is considered a friendly gesture. It originates as far as from the middle age when people carried trouts with them to greet others with. The larger the trout, the closer the friend. Nowadays trout slaps are only seen in a text form on IRC because modern people don't like being slapped with cold, slimy fish. Maybe, just maybe, in the future trout slapping in real life will become popular again.

Look at number one! Now that person has really made a lot of friends!
Here I always thought a trout was a symbol of something else.... go figure
