Anyone would think they'd been watching lord of the rings when they made that.

Zelda is one of the main reasons we bought a gamecube. Very excited for this game!

It doesn't, but there are blatent references to it:

Being chased on horseback by the boar-riders=waarg riders (or whatever the hell they're called). Possibly also the dark riders chasing Liv Tyler in Fellowship

Dead/Ghost Warriors =....um...dead...ghost...warriors

Flying dragony things (ok so they're not really original in any sense)

The most blatent of all:
Being chased by a HUGE SPIDER through a tunnel

What, you mean they actually made another Zelda game where Link isn't a freaking child with a little dagger? FINALLY

The last Zelda game I played was Mask of Majora or something (the one after Ocarina of time), and to say I was disappointed would be the king of all understatements.

Well Link started out as a little kid with a dagger... But i see where you're coming from. Just not a fan of the classics.

I had this conversation with starsailor. Are you saying that since Tolkien made the monster of all fantasy books and Jackson made the monster of all fantasy movies that we have to compare eveything to it? LOTR cam out a long time ago and covered like everything in the fantasy world. I guess we cant make anymore fantasy movies/books/games. geez this sux. now everything fantasy is a LOTR rip-off... darn

And waargs are wolves. Those things chasing him are warthogs with the goblins from Wind Waker on them. Most of the creatures in LOTR are universal fantasy creatures. Orcs, goblins, dragons, etc

And Ocarina had the horse and shooting things with bows and arrows way b4 LOTR the movie. I bet if Jackson hadn't made the LOTR movie most of you wouldn't even know what LOTR was.

Yes I know waargs are bloody wolves - I was drawing comparisons, not saying they were identical.

Get a grip - it's not like I said "Wow that's a rip off of lord of the rings, it's identical!". I know a lot of the lotr creatures are universal, but you can't seriously look at the zelda trailer and say that there aren't some comparisons that could be made - especially with that huge spider.

All I was saying was that bits of it looked like the movies (and not the books, the books could be an influence but given that everyone's imagination is different, it's more likely to be the movies, i.e. Peter Jackson's imagination, the visual medium) had influenced the makers of the game - I'm not even saying that's a bad thing.

Read what is said before commenting.

Not really. He of course wasn't older than 16 I'd say, but I never really saw him as a kid (though this might be because of lack of graphical power at the time ). The main reason I said that is because the N64 games made him look like a 7 year old. I mean come on.. he needs to have at least reached puberty before he goes out and saves the world. BTW I love the classics

There was a huge spider in Ocarina of time, which came out before the movies did. There have been dead ghost warrior things in probably every Zelda game ever made. And Ocarina of time had Link riding on horseback (I don't think there were any other riders chasing him, but monsters would chase you, and you could shoot arrows and everything. Is it really that much of a connection to LOTR to have 1 guy on horseback being chased by a bunch of guys on warthog back?)

I honestly saw little to no resemblance of the game to the LOTR movies. The Zelda games have always had that kind of theme and darkness to them. The only thing I thought while watching the trailer was that it was a good thing they were keeping the traditional elements of the games.

Yea in Zelda: Link's Awakening you can get your pictures taken with this mouse thing and link looks to be about 10-12 lol I like older link but I really did enjoy the cartoony look of Windwaker. I thought it would look dumb with the graphics of the new one, but now that i see it they look really scary. (in a good way)

Yes, a huge spider was in ocarina, that's not the comparison I'm trying to draw, it's the huge spider in tunnels, specifically (having watched the making of ROTK) tunnels with smooth floors but rough walls/ceiling, that got me.

Similarly the goblins riding the boars is on a monster riding animal theme hence the comparison. The chasing bit was an afterthought which I admit was scraping the barrel rather a lot.

Zelda games may always have darkness in them, that doesn't mean that their creators can't be influenced (admittedly that doesn't mean that they necessarily were influenced, just that I saw a possible influence).

Pretty much everything in that "fantasy" genre has some simular elements/characters. I wouldn't say this Zelda is any more influenced by LOTR than World of Warcraft, EverQuest... or pretty much any fantasy game.
