I did Doom3 this weekend. Just let me say that I'm a little bit "perplex" about it. I think that if I was a Sierra/Valve producer, I would be seriously thinking right now about suing Activision/idsoftware for copyright violation!!!

Ok, this game is really fun, the graphic are superb but there is, IMHO, too much similarity between these two game to be only "coincidence". Let's just talk about the more obvious ones!!!!

-Both stories occur mainly in a scientific laboratory!!! (interaction with scientist).

-Both use the teleportation pad ("evil beast" has been teleported in our world).

-We are teleported in a strange parallel world at the end of the game!

-BIG similarity between these two parallel worlds (planet looks like small floating rocks in some kinda space).

-Some monsters appear under an electric beam (furthermore, both are throwing thing at you, one is throwing an electric discharge, the other a plasma bullet) (this is at least a small difference).

-Healing station (which are quite similar) all along the game!

-Some monsters are "physically" quite similar.
-Just think about the four legged "kind of" pig in both case! (one bite, the other send a shockwave on ground).
-Final boss in hl is a big floating baby, in doom3, they use flying baby too (even if they're smaller).
-Similarity between the 2 monsters that appears under the electric beam.

-Presence of Zombie, alien and military enemies.

-Both use in some part of the game a small "cart" on electric railways!

Etc, etc, etc….!!!!

I think I could be able to fill 2 pages of those "strange" similarities between both games, but I'll stop here!!!

Seriously, because of all these similarities, if I wasn't knowing what I was playing, I would have say that it was probably HL2 (I haven't tried the real HL2 yet). (Or maybe I would have thought that it was a reedition of HL1 with better graphics)!!!

So, it was a really fun experience but I think that the Doom3 producer/writer could have use a little bit more their probably well paid brain in order to give us a more novel/original story!!!

Did you fell the same way as I when you finished Doom3!!!

Erm. Doom 3 is rather similar in storyline to the original Doom imo, which was out back when DOS ruled the computer world.

actually if u want to get technical squid it should be the other way around since first Doom was based on all the above just not as graphic & it came out long before Half-Life Doom set the way for first person shooters, yea yea wolfenstien was good to but doom nailed it.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

Doom.

Loved having a phone connection on that game and DMing with a buddy of mine. Of course, then we graduated to Duke Nukem. God that was great.

Amusing sub twist. My buddy is about 5'5 and a little (ahem) self conscious about his height. I'm 6'4" and can't resist the occasional jab about his shortness. When DMing in Duke all I would use on him was the shrink ray, just because it annoyed the crap out of him. It got to the point where I couldn't kill him though, because he got pretty good at dodging while shrunk, and I couldn't stop giggling while trying to step on him.

Yeah maybe!!!!

My reference point is half life because I haven't played Doom1 and Doom2!! So, I don't know what was the story of those 2 games!!!

But the fact is, there is too much similarities to be just "coincidence". Don't know who has copied on the other but...!

Lets be honest!!!

I can understand that basically all FPS game will share a few point on the story, but here, one is the clone of the other!!!!

HL borrowed a ton from Doom.

The orginal doom takes place on the UAC research facility on the Martian moon Phobos. They discovered alien teleporter technology. While working with it, somethin went wrong, and a gate from hell opened. Also the second facility dissaprears, along with the whole moon of Demios. When you reach the transporter on Phobos, you get teleported to Demios. There you are find all kinds of alien tech and trasnporters. Finally when you get to the edge of demios, your character looks over and see not mars, but hell. Then you have to fight through hell to get home

With that said... HL has nothing to do with Doom. The fact that they both has teleporters has nothing to do with similarity. Since they both have teleporters does that make HL and Doom similar to Halo or Star Trek? They have teleporters. The meaning behind the teleporters in HL, i believe, were to expand the knowledge of mankind. Doom sounds more like an accident.

I think that Squidly was refering more to the actual items in the games rather than the storyline, i.e the floating world, etc.

In Doom3 you get transported to hell, not an alien planet. IMO I don't think the main bosses share to much in common, but hey...

You also might note that your list features several necessary components of a successful FPS

To quote John Carmack, "Story in a First Person Shooter is like story in a porno. It's there, but it's not really necessary." I had thought that Doom3 was basically the original Doom done perfect, but then again, I never got all the way through the original Doom.

Besides both storylines are based within Science Fiction, even though one does dip more into the occult than just pure science fiction. Or would you rather run around swinging a broadsword +1 instead of a crowbar?

Doom may have started it, but Half-Life perfected it.

Just remember, it's not about who does it first, but rather, who does it best.
