I was never inside when I was a kid. Now, both of my kids think the sun burns their skin like a vampire! They are computer geeks to the max and they are only 8 and 10.

You know that you can always place a certain amount of time their allowed onto the computer, tv, etc - such as 2 hours a day. This way you force them to go outside... It's not the best solution but my parents did it to me when I was younger. But, I always loved being outside so go figure.

Parents need to take more responsibility, and get their kids doing positive things... instead of using the tv and video games as a cheap babysitter.

When I become a parent, I doubt I'll have any time left for video games. I plan to be busy spending time with my children.

I have mixed feelings though about this subject. I grew up outside, playing a lot of sports. In fact, I was pretty much forced into playing Ringette and Hockey (my dad decided that the girl's hockey team wasn't at a high enough skill level, so I even had to play on a boy's team). I was on a "rep" team for Ringette (its a weird game for women, like hockey, but w/ no blade on your stick, and a blue rubber ring instead of a puck), and we got to travel all over Canada, and even to the USA for tournaments, demonstrations, etc. It was a lot of pressure to be put on a young child. I think it was because my dad had so many issues though.

It's good to encourage your children, but do not try and live vicariously through them. I also played video games when I was younger too. I loved my Commodore 64. I think it's all about finding balance. I do think games/computers, combined with the fast food/processed are the main things that have led to this epidemic. People are simply getting lazy. It's sad.

you also just have to remember that things have changed...if you grew up today, you would do the same things...also, being forced to do things by your parents can now be easily avoided by todays technology

Ill just tie my kids to the back bumper.
They can run behind the car all the way to McDonalds.
That will get them outside plus get them in shape

I certainly could have done with more encouragement to get out and active more when I was in my teens. By that I mean help and encouragement with sports meetings and equipment rather than the "go out and play" or "don't sit inside playing that computer all day" kind of encouragement.

You're right things have changed, things kids do now are different than what we did at our age. It's the parents responsibility to make sure their kids aren't some pasty white geek. Technology may make it easier to avert your parents wishes but when I was little no matter how we got around it our parents smacked the sense into us. That's what's wrong with this country today. Either parents don't take responsibility for their kids or if they do the kids go crying about abuse or some other thing.
