Potato is confused... Modernism was a bad thing, right? I don't quite understand why it was so bad... Could anyone possibly give potato a run-down of modernism and why it was so bad?

This has potential to get padlocked very quickly.

Modernism isn't considered bad by everyone. Modernism is basically change. There are those who consider change to be good, and those who consider change to be bad. Conservatives will be more likely to view modernism as bad, since they tend to view tradition as something to be valued.

If you haven't, go watch Fiddler on the Roof. There is a very good example of a man trying to cling to tradition.

mod·ern·ism Audio pronunciation of "modernism" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mdr-nzm)
n.

1.
1. Modern thought, character, or practice.
2. Sympathy with or conformity to modern ideas, practices, or standards.
2. A peculiarity of usage or style, as of a word or phrase, that is characteristic of modern times.
3. often Modernism The deliberate departure from tradition and the use of innovative forms of expression that distinguish many styles in the arts and literature of the 20th century.
4. often Modernism A Roman Catholic movement, officially condemned in 1907, that attempted to examine traditional belief according to contemporary philosophy, criticism, and historiography.

Fiddler on the Roof...I just bought the movie DVD friday. How weird that you should mention that.

I think that this is a very very broad subject. I would not of thought we could get to far into the bad zone....but who knows. Im willing to see where this may take us.

Nice link roof. I wasn't actually talking about 'Modernism' as a whole (I was actually refering to the art movement that took place for several decades). Roof's link will help though *hopefully*.

ahh ha Modernism in art. Well, let me get you some things on that. I have a minor in art history and modernism was an important part of my studies. I'll put some thoughts together for you and post them tomorrow evening.

Are you doing this for an art appreciation class, art history, personal curiosity or what?

Do you ever do your homework without picking the brains here first?

I'd be able to give you a bunch of great links if I had access to the accounts created at various encyclopedia websites if I were back in Chicago. Sorry 'bout that.

I think it boiles down to ones taste. I appreciate European or Victorian aged art, Potraits and Murals. I also appreciate bronze and marble statues. But art that leaves me scratching my head at the purpose or meaning, even when an explanation is provided by the artist, dumbfounds me. Try comparing a painting that traps a moment of life, like oh... a painting of a cowboy wrestling up a herd, to a live exhibit of an "artist" that opens up 10s of packages of bologne and dumps it all on a bed(I still can't remember what that was all about). I think of "Modern Art" in general(there are good works) as a fad or "in fashion". Its as if one claims poop smells great because its cool to say it does, irregardless of the obvious evidence to the contrary.

Alright, that would really help JCOM! I'm suppose to be doing this for art history, I don't really understand why it was so bad - though I suppose that towards the end anything could be viewed as artwork that therefore art really lost all of its meaning.

5th GHG E.G. Mine, this is the first time ever that I've posted about my possible homework on here ...

alrighty potato, here is what I got:

http://www.tysartetc.com/potato/modernism_1.pdf

http://www.tysartetc.com/potato/modernism_2.pdf

http://www.tysartetc.com/potato/modernism_3.pdf

http://www.tysartetc.com/potato/modernism_4.pdf

This information is straight out of one of my college books. For bibliography purposes it is as follows:

Art Since Mid-Century: 1945 to the present, Daniel Wheeler, The Vendome Press, Inc., New York.

this is the introduction to the book. Modernism in Art is a complex concept and very difficult to "summarize". However, this may help you a little. I stopped it after the 4th page, because it goes into detail about each movement that made up Moderism in art as a whole. If you want the rest of it, just let me know and I will get it scanned for you... I wish I could have come up with a good summary for you, but I think you might make better sense out of this intro that what I would try to articulate.

I will read over this material again(its been about 8 years since I really sat down and studied it) and see if I can't translate it into something a little less abstract in concept.

BTW, you will need acrobat reader to view these files. hope this helps, let me know if you need the rest of the intro...
