The French love their bread, yet remain nice and slim.
Indians eats mostly rice, and that keeps them healthy.
Italians love their pasta, and they have some of the longest life-expectancies in the world.
The 170 or so riders in the Tour de France take in pretty much as many carbs as they possibly can.
So what gives with this harmful fad? |

Most people that are on that diet don't get much exercise. It is not hard to gain weight when you aren't very active. I am currently on a diet trying to shed a few pounds. My diet includes a lot of exercise though.
When I was younger I was very active and could eat whatever I wanted and would not gain a pound. Since I have aged a few years and work for a living I have found myself a lot less active and having to watch my weight. _________________

And that is the crux of it. Americans are move productive and move around A LOT more. Means less time to eat right and exercise. Low Carb diets make up for that. |

People who exercise a lot need a lot of carbs for energy. When someone doesn't use up all the energy from the carbs, it gets stored as fat. In the last example, people in the Tour de France need all those carbs if they want to finish and it's gone by the end of their ride.
I guess americans have this "low carb" thing cause they drive a car to their next-door neighbor. Most other countries are a lot more active and walk around more. _________________

This is a fad diet that has been reincarnated in various forms for
perhaps a century now. I've found it best to just let people do whatever
rather than argue with them, tho _________________

I personally don't think low carb diets are the way to go. The diet doesn't teach you how to eat right. You should have a well balanced diet, not just carb free stuff. Probably 75% or more will gain back the weight that they've lost when they get off of the low carb diet, simply because they go back to eating carbs and didn't learn how to eat right. _________________

well if you workout a ton like i do, you need all those carbs (like previously stated), otherwise you just cant last as long and you'll be feeling tired without em. But i agree with a bit of everything else everyone has a said |

That is also partly because of your body's natrual reaction. This is one of the main reasons why diets dont work, as you go on a diet, you consume less food - logically. As you consume less food, your body decides that it will burn less and less energy and fat, a natrual reaction thats a safety brought on by evolution. Therefore, eating less food will help you lose weight for a few weeks, but after a certain amount of time, your body will adjust back to the intake level. This is why you HAVE to work out / by active during a diet... Or atleast thats what they tell us at school... |

One cannot overlook the fact that as your body ages, your metabolism changes as well. After 40, the adage is: You gain 5 lbs a year if you're not active and mindful of a balanced diet. _________________ Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell.

I hate the commercials for Michelob light beer that is low in carbs. It says that it is for people like this. And it shows people swimming. Carbs are the best things for swimmers. I was on the swim team for a few years and before every big meet we'd have a huge carb dinner where we'd eat as much pasta as possible. Not that drinking more beer for carbs is going to help you swim, but having the same amount of low carb beer isn't going to help you either. |

What? Your body burns as much energy as you force it to. Because you are taking in less energy, your body will become more sluggish in an attempt to conserve that energy. Of course you can force your body to burn it off by exercising, but you won't be able to stay consistent with your routine if you continue to take in small amounts of food (unless you're routine is for pansies that can't do 10 pushups). You'll probably become even more tired from the lack of energy.
The problem with most people trying to lose weight is that they don't bother to gather a lot of information. All they know is that they want to lose weight, and assume that they'll achieve their goal by eating less food/taking in less carbs etc. That is the noobie's way to lose weight! You might lose quite a few pounds, but you can expect to gain them right back if all you've been doing is eating less for a few months. Before you do though, you have to suffer the side effects of your "diet". These can be especially bad if you don't take in the proper amount of vitamens and other necessities of the body.
If you're serious about losing fat, the process is a lot more complicated. The best way to go about it is combining a good weight-lifting routine, cardio exercises, and a good diet to supplement them. First off, you need to understand that to lose weight you'll obviously need to be on a calorie deficit (meaning you take in less calories than you burn). This doesn't mean you should fast or eat consdierably less amounts of food. Your body will still need the proper amount of energy when you start to exercise. Also, be sure to get your vitamens and all those healthy things. If you need to take supplements to do this, go right ahead. STAY AWAY FROM JUNK FOOD! Yes, you can't drink sodas, candy, cookies, greasy chips, and all that great stuff at leisure anymore. DRINK WATER, and plenty of it. There's a long list of benefits from water, but you can look those up on your own.
Obviously, you'll need to perform some kinds of aerobic activities to start burning calories (running, biking, rowing, or my favorite: jump rope). One thing that is constantly overlooked though is weight-lifting. It's not necessary, but it does help. Lifting weights will boost your metabolism, and whip your puny boy body into shape
I could go on for quite awhile, but my fat pudgy hands are tired (best exercise I've had today!). It's sort of strange that I know all of this without even taking a health class, because I'm one of the last people who needs to worry about losing weight.
[edit] One last thing I forgot to add. As far as I know, America is the only country that has three big meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner for those of you that are stupid). All the other countries have 6 small meals a day. The latter is better for you.... _________________
